Question check engine light

I have a 1992 350 LE with a 454, and the check engine light is on. The guy at Auto zone told me that they couldn't check the codes with their computer, because it was too old, but all I needed to do was jump the 2 end ports on the connectors and the codes would display without a computer. I managed to blow a fuse.
Is there a way to find the codes without using a code reader?
I'm not even sure I'm using the right connector. Where is it located?
Please help!

the data link should be near the steering under the dash, its a multi pin socket but only had 3 wires going to it jump the 2 that are close to each other,[5&7?]with a paper clip.
Turn on the key and the check engine light will flash 3 sets of 3 to tell you its ready, then it will flash each code 3 times, hope its an eazy fix, good luck

I've wondered how to get the OBD 1 codes. Is there a web site that has specific codes for the P30 truck or are they just the generic codes used in cars?
