Auxiliary Water Heater

Since our '85 345 is normally parked on some vacant land we own, I was wondering if there is any way add an auxiliary water heater to give greater hot water capacity. I would have to add a tee somewhere between the water heater and the shower. Anyone have an idea about how and where to do this?

You might want to check with Lewster here on the forum about a tankless RV water heater.

Hey GL,

Since your AS is parked and will not be moving, you have the option of an on-demand, tankless water heater that will give you an unlimited supply of hot water. There are many types other than the RV-500 which is the ONLY tankless propane-fired water heater certified for RV use. You don't need to spend the $800-900 for this model.

There are many other options for household units that will suit your needs perfectly in both electric and LP models. I have installed many of these in homes and can give you lots of direction for this type of unit.

PM me of you want more info ...........................

Thanks, Lew. I was considering a tankless heater. I've had one in my house for nearly 20 years and it's been great. I've been looking at a Bosch model which can be installed outside and burns no propane until you turn on the water. I'm thinking I would mount this unit outside but close to the A/S and run a line to a tee between the on-board water heater and the shower. Or, should the tee come before the on-board heater? Also, I don't know the best location and the best way to gain access.

If you are going to use a Bosch, then you don't need the intenal water heater at all. Realistically, it will only get in the way! You can run a PEX line from the Bosch right to the hot water outlet feed from the trailer's water heater and connect right into that after you remove the connection from the tank.

Use PEX tubing and Sea-Tech fittings and make your life easy!!

Lew, I hate to sound so ignorant (which I am) but where is the water heater in an '85 345?

Good question.

Not having worked on a 345 water heater IIWY, I would look on the exterior for the approx. 12 X 12" door that covers the water heater. Then you will know where it is on the inside. It's probably covered inside by a cabinet or closet or similar.

Perhaps you could post that question on the 345 forum and get your definitive answer from an owner.

The water heater is located under the aft dinette seat in most 345s. Look for the louvered access door from the outside (about 12 x 12)...it's under whatever is inside right there.

You'r in the right forum already here....I don't think there is a specific 345 forum. In addition to this site, you might also consider posting tech questions on ThisOldRV.com, lots of Airstream motorhomers (non Airstream as well) over there too.
