Air Conditioner

My original Rear Air Conditioner works intermittantly, when you turn it on with the temperature control turned to maximum cold the Air Conditioner will work properly. The next time you turn it on the Fan and Compressor will come on but it will blow warm air instead of cold. You may try turning it on several times after waiting a few minutes each time, it will continue to blow warm air, other times it will be cold does anyone have any thought of what I should be checking. Since the Compressor comes on it can't be the Temperature control. If the recommendation is to replace it what is the best unit with the heat strip that will still utilize the original drip pans for allowing the water to run off through the hose instead of running down the side of the outer skin? Thanks for your input.

Gunter, is it a heat pump, with a reverse cycle valve? If so, the valve could be bad. It will cause this problem, it has happened to me.

What does the valve look like, how can it be tested and where can I get a replacement? Will all of the Freon have to be purged to change the valve? The Air conditioner is the original Coleman. My son is currently using it so I can't verify the accuracy of the manufacturer but I believe when I looked at the manuals that came with the motorhome that they were Coleman.

The valve would be up inside the roof part of the unit.It would look like a, well, valve, with four freon lines going into and out of it, and several wires going to it. To replace or bypass it, the freon would have to be evacuated.

I believe you are telling me an RV repair facility can test the air conditioner for this defect and replace the valve and refill the freon. I always thought that you couldn't add freon to these units.

Yes, they can check for this problem.
In order to add or remove freon, a pair of service ports will have to be added. My air conditioner comes with them already. After the freon is removed, the valve would then be able to be removed.

Since I live close to Jackson Center (50 miles) I emailed them regarding the problem. I asked if it can be repaired or what would a replacement Air Conditioner cost. They didn't mention a repair was available but did say a 13,500 btu with the heat strip including installation would be $1,400.00.

$1400 seems a bit high. For that much, I think I would pay somebody $100 or so to check out the old one. If you want to get a replacement unit, try calling around for prices.
FYI, you can get a 15,000btu Carrier with a heat strip for $550 from Family RV repair in Tarpon Springs FL. Even if you paid someone $500 to install the new unit (way too much), you would be money ahead.

Terry thanks for your input. I will make some calls to see who might work on them.

So far I have not found anyone that will work on air conditioners where you have to either add or remove the freon. EPA issues I am being told. This included the factory at Jackson Center. If the reversing valve is the cause for my problem no one will replace it due to the freon issue.

Here is a link to the new a/c: eBay Motors: BRAND NEW CARRIER 15K-BTU RV,BOAT,AC, AIR CONDITIONER (item 140132637160 end time Jul-05-07 11:25:49 PDT)

Here is a link to the heat strip that goes with it:eBay Motors: HEAT STRIP UPGRADE OPTION...AVAILABLE ON 13.5 & 15k A/C (item 140123957216 end time Jun-29-07 15:49:07 PDT)

Now all you have to do is find someone to toss the old one off the roof, and put the new one on.

My son came back from camping today and advised me that the first three days the rear air conditioner was intermittant would work sometimes and not other. The last two days he has not had any problems it blew cold air everytime he turned it on.
