89 310 diesel with a cummins?

I have been looking for a MH for a while. I have looked at a few310s, and recently learned of one for sale somewhat nearby. The body looks straight, but it has not been driven in sometime although the owner says the motor turns over. He did tell me that the brake calipers lock up when he last tried to move it. I wonder if the brakes are rusted shut. That's not my main concern (although it is a concern) and not a good sign.

The owner has told me that the engine is a Cummins diesel. I thought that the 310s were all Isuzu turbodiesels. Am I wrong? Or does the seller simply not know what he has?

With that said, what do you all think is a fair range for a 1989 310 diesel which should be classified as a straight body but barn find. I have no idea for instance if the generator works. Is 5 to 7k a fair range or is that too high considering all the work that will likely be needed for tires belts hoses fluids perhaps turbos not to mention the systems on the RV.

If it were me... I would not bother. This is the engine matrix. The Cummins would be a conversion, and who knows what else is wrong. There are plenty of opportunities for those who wait. I would recommend identifying what combination you want, and what size you want based off of the engine chart, and target that.

That chart does not even list a 1983 motorhome. I believe that the Cummins was available in some models, but I could not tell you which.

Rob

Are you messing around in the "Forrest" again? That's the only 310 Cummins I know of. He even sent me pics.

Cheers
Tony

Isuzu do make big 5.2L four cylinders in the W series GM medium trucks but the Isuzu in my 310 is the 6BD1A + Bae turbo, 5.8L 6 cylinder. Also used in excavators, generators on ships and hospitals and all sorts of other applications where durability is paramount.

Cheers

The 1989 model year for a 310 sounds wrong. The last year for 310's that I know of was 1984. Sounds like you will have to take a look to figure out what the guy has.

A Cummins diesel conversion that was done right is the ultimate Classic Moho. It will have good power and get better mileage than any other configuration.
It is certainly worth a look, they are rare birds.

Yes and no....The Cummins especially the 12 valve is a lot noisier than my Isuzu turbo diesel. I would also take the Isuzu over the Cummins in build quality and durability (my local truck mechanics word, not mine) and filtration. That being said, it's easier to find parts for the Cummins and cheaper to make more power.

Cheers

Biggest issues with that particular find are:
1. Year and model do not seem to match.
2. Engine stated does not match the year.
3. Look at the page with all the pics, and pay close attention to the undercarriage pictures. That is some significant rust on something hauling significant weight.
