Team,

Been inactive for a while. The P7100 rebuild and timing adjustment made her sound like a new engine. Fuel economy is back in the 12+ range. However I still had longer starts than I would like. They went from 20+ seconds to 10+ seconds. I did a lot of research and everyone said it could not be the starter, because they either work or they don't, and it had to be compression issues, requiring a full rebuild. Talked about the issue with my wife, and she said "what do they know? We've had four cars so far that had weak starters that you have replaced. Just because it's a cummins it's immune?" She totally said this offhandedly while folding laundry and chatting about this. So it got me thinking, and I looked up a starter for a 1994 Dodge 2500 with the cummins 5.9L at autozone, well all autoparts stores have redesigned the starter configuration for heavy duty applications for a range of applications. The fitment is perfect for the dodges but does not work for the spartan chassis. In fact the only model that fits for clearances is the AC Delco 28MT I had identified for SebasSF earlier this year. Sadly they are very expensive at auto parts stores ($250-270). On amazon they are $150-200. However if you look online you can find the 28MT for a perkins diesel or lincoln welder for around $75. The bendix drive is wrong for the 5.9L cummins application, but the bendix drive is only $17, so for a grand total of $92 and about 20minutes of swapping parts you have yourself a new starter. The most rewarding part was turning the key and her firing right up!

Good to know! Iíll have to research that starter for my skid steer. Same engine, two cylinders shorter.

Iíve been around a lot of worn out diesel tractors. Hard starting is a sign of low compression. But itís also accompanied by loss of power and smoke. Iíd say if your mileage is back up and itís making good power, cylinder wear isnít a problem.

Just as a reference, we just did 3000 mile trip with Richard and Nancy. We were both pulling toads and driving the speed limit (65-70) through the ďhillsĒ from Bar Harbor to Cooperstown and on to out perspective homes. We both got 10.7 mpg.

Did a 3,000 mile trip for the thanksgiving holiday. She did fine except a code on the transmission. 12MPG average down to texas, 11.5mpg through texas, and 11.2 MPG back to KS. Overall was 11.6MPG towing the Saturn.

When someone with a cummins pusher gets a chance can you send me a picture of your throttle linkage. I think I messed up the linkage reassembly, and I have been getting Allison Code 21 12 TPS low fail. After looking at the linkage, I think I crossed the connection alignment. Lower on the inside rail and TPS on the outside rail. I also believe there was a spacer to ensure proper travel alignment.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention I decided to go lithium on the battery bank. Have 300AH of lithium batteries, but only two of three installed to proof of concept it on the latest road trip. Will add the third this week. Hope everyone is well. Sorry I have not been active. This training at work has been very demanding.

Also forgot to mention. Took the time to rent a carpet steam cleaner from home depot, and used the upholstery attachment. I hit all the upholstery, exposed carpet, and mouse fur... the water was disgusting.... I used ZEP carpet shampoo, and went through 25 gallons of water to clean her. Each one went in clear, and each one dumped out black. She's so clean now! I am going to make this a yearly event. Even the high traffic area short of the bed no longer looks soiled... I thought I was going to have to accelerate my carpet replacement, but after doing this... I am good for another couple years!

Yep, picture number 2... the TPS linkage is connected to the wrong side of the bracket on mine. The larger diameter cylinder side that is against the plate in your pic is dangling in air on the opposite side, and placing a kink in the line whenever under tension due to geometry. From what I have read a mere quarter inch of play will throw a code, and that is what I would see here. Also looks like you have washers to keep the cotter pin snug. Will need to swap it over this weekend, and get some kotter pins to prevent a litany of expletives.

Thank you very much for taking the time. Very much appreciated.
