345 Rear furnace
Streamers,
Our original rear Duo-Therm furnace gave up. I just pulled it out and found the exhaust tube rusted out. Looks like a new Suburban is in order. Has anyone replaced the rear furnace? I have seen some things on replacing the front but not the rear. We have a 1986 345 with the standard N-S rear queen floor plan.
Thanks, Rob

The rear furnace went out in my '86 345 and I replaced it with a Suburban. Had to move a sewer vent and the vent holes for the Suburban aren't the same as the old one. On mine, it burnt the outer shin when it failed and I had it repaired, then I cut the new holes to match the new furnace.
I got the skin fixed at Griffin's RV in OKC, then I took it to Camper World to let them install it for free, but after waiting all day, they wouldn't do it for free because of the sewer vent. I raised hell and they gave a really good deal on the furnace. Didn't take a hour for me to put in in either.

Mel, Thanks for the help.
I have my new Suburban installed. Everything is done except making the patch to cover the original intake and exhaust holes.
I was able to use the Suburban NT-20S furnace. It is 1000 btu smaller than the original, but should be fine. This unit has a smaller physical size and fits beside the black tank vent.
I will post pictures of the install in the next few days.

Streamers,
Here are some pictures of the rear furnace install in our '86 345.
The first shot is of the old unit with it's rusted exhaust pipe. Yuk!
The second is the empty bay. Notice the two water lines that run just over the exhaust pipe area.
Third is a close-up of the side wall.
Four is the new unit on the floor.
Five is the exhaust end of the new unit. The exhaust is higher than the old one.
Six and seven are shots of how much material must be removed to make access for the hot air ducts. This unit has the ducts farther from the outer wall of the coach.
Eight is the unit installed and all ready to go.
Nine is the outer face of the cabinet on the floor. As you can see, the dowels are not glued, they just come apart.
As for the exhaust being quite a bit closer to the water lines, I wraped the exhaust tube with a double wrap of racing header wrap material. I will also put a wrap on the lines themselves.
My battery is dead in the digital camera, so I can't get a picture of the outside of the coach. I should be able to do that tomorrow evening.

Streamers,
Here is a shot of the new outside section. This is made of .058" high gloss stainless steel. The horizontal lines in the new section are just reflections of the siding on my race shop.

Looks nice - good job! I had to replace both of mine; used new "hydroflame" units - had to do some skin-cutting mods along the way, and bui8ld little platforms to sit them on, but it's done and it works.
