Thanks rmKrum. It turned out pretty good. I actually cut down that walnut tree about 26 yrs ago. My tools are all job site tools not cabinet grade so it makes mill work difficult. You work with what ya got though right!

Yeah, sometimes you gotta run what you bring. I have more tools now, but I built a lot of decent stuff with a portable circular saw and a straight edge to guide it.

The best tool is what's between your ears. Some people use it better than others.

If its good enough for you Mike; then at the end of the day, that's all that counts. I can't or won't judge a persons project by photos.

PS That walnut tree is worth a lot more than you think. Solid walnut being sold these days is crap. Now they dye the wood before it goes into the kiln so you can't tell if its sapwood or hardwood. With pine, white oak or maple you may run 25% wastage leaving 75% good product; with walnut these days its reversed, 25% good and 75% waste. It's not uncommon for me to be sent to the hardwood supplier, have him pull two lifts down of 8/4 material and spend an hour sorting through it to come out with six to eight boards that are half decent. I hate working with walnut as you spend so much time jointing a board only to find it not nearly as good as you thought; putting it aside and going to the next board.

Cheers
Tony

The worst thing Tony is that I dont have a planer. Using a dowel jig for my jointing of course centers the dowel no matter the thickness of the material. I had a friend plane the walnut to 3/4" not knowing what I was eventually going to use it for......so as you know, buying plywood at the big box is a crap shoot at best. Thickness overall and thickness of the veneer. Ive got a pretty good bosch router that I can set up as a jointer but no real way to plane. So, i did what I could with the table saw and got it close, then sanded to try and get a decent joint. That veneer is so thin that.........well you know all this stuff. They look pretty good, Im satisfied. Like you said, thats all that counts. Ive got a few pieces of that old growth walnut left along with some full 1" x 12" red oak that Ive been holding onto for all this time. Back when I was working we did have a decent shop, I was able to build some book cases and what not out of the oak and still have some really large pieces left. Beautiful stuff in lengths up to 12 feet. $$$$$$.

Thanks fellas. Got it installed today and the extension tucks away real nice behind the folded door. Im going to use old school lable leaf pins to join the two when using the extension. The leg slides out plenty under the extension.

Wow. I didn't realize that it folded up and then into an opening. You really did a great job. I'm not sure I could get it that neatly done with a workshop full of power tools! Super!

I was thinking that the walnut and oak tied the table, ottomans, floor and rug all together in the living area there. The couch should be done next week and it will be a camel color faux leather. Happy so far, trying to clean the space up from the heavy feel of the early eighties.
