Another project! In stripping off paint, I discovered something new.

When purchased, my 345LE had black paint 'patch' at entry door handle. Now with paint removed, I've discovered that this is actually a repair for hasp lock.

Don't want patch as huge as what is at entry door handle, but also thinking a patch 'may' strengthen entry door handle area.

My thoughts are to take patch to beltline, no clue how far down or how far from door jamb.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Derek

Oh my.....that's not impossible but that is a huge amount of work. I tig welded a patch to cover up a HACK job on my 325LE where they had changed the location of the front furnace exhaust.....took me 3 Saturday's to complete the job. You will get warpage but it is not a problem. I suggest you do as large as a piece as you can and try to stay from seam to seam. There are pictures of mine in "It's Never Done"

I would just rivet a patch from the door lock to the edge of the door, about the same size as the lock itself.
On a 93 trailer that had damage to the lower panel of the door, I did a precise cut and overlayed the entire panel from the beltline down. Other than the different color pinstriping, you can't tell.

Finally removing center beltline molding. Now I'm able to determine how large a patch I'll use. Then I notice Click image for larger version

ID:	277220this extra panel 'peeking' out from upper skin. Attempted to push upwards, but will not budge. Any thoughts on what extra panel is? Or do I need to gut interior section of door to figure this out?

Derek, that panel is most likely part of the stiffner inside the door. The 5 rivets between the window and the belt line are what holds the stiffner in place.

Brad, now I've got to figure out, do I try and cut this bit away, or remove it entirely. Suggestions?

I know this is not the answer you want to hear, but the center belt molding serves a purpose for hiding the seam of the upper and lower panel. These were not constructed like some of the trailers with a clean rivet line.

Too late! Never cared for center beltline molding, no matter that it's hiding several thousand rivets. At least I'll be different!

Go "Buck" Rivet NAKED, I say...

Here is my upper belt line, naked... The rivets are not perfectly spaced, but it didnt offend my eye too much.

That's going to be a tough one to clean up. If you have the panel off the inside of the door you could remove the rivets, remove the stiffener, trim the bottom and reinstall it.

About the only other way I can think of is to carefully use a dremel with cut off wheel and trim the bottom edge to be flush with the outer panel. Once you put rivets in all of the holes the stiffener edge shouldn't be noticeable.

By the way, don't dispose of your rub rails. Stash them somewhere as someday someone will need a replacement or you might want to put them back on.

I'm keeping the center beltline trim until I sell and leave Florida. If I can find someone here in Florida who's willing to hold onto them if I haven't gotten rid of them by then, I'll be selling them for aluminum. Maybe, if I can fit them inside of Airstream, I'll stop by Brad's in Kentucky on my way to Alaska and drop them off!

Oh, found this photo somewhere online, and had to laugh!

Along with exterior, I'm also working on interior. Ripping out cockpit area carpet. Actual measurement is about 48 square feet, but know that engine cover, as well as footwell and sides @ seats. Who has actual required measurement? Anyone? Anyone?
Thanks, Derek

HI Derek, nice polishing progress you are making.
While we are focused on the newly exposed belt line ( yours is not bad looking)
Let me share an idea for trimming that area on a polished exterior that has been churning around in my head for a while.

Drum roll please. ENGINE TURNING. That's the beautiful work done on High end cars and planes of the thirties. And could be done as an accent and to hide the belt line.
And to look pretty darn cool on a polished aluminum motorhome.

By the time you are done with the polishing, your arms will be so buff that a few more hours finishing the exterior off in style will be nothing.
For YOU to do that is.

Cheers Richard

Peter, realized that after removing the center belt molding. Just really never cared for that molding. Even with the clean rivet line, I'm happy with belt molding being history.

Derek, if you would consider selling just the corner section starting at the corner rivet line, I know Roquefort would be for ever grateful.
I am sure he would make it worth your time to get it to him in Germany somehow .

I'll be honest, shipping that piece to Germany, with no damage, it might be worth his time to see if he can't spend a bit of time with what he has. Hard enough to get stuff shipped in U.S. without damage, I really wonder what it would be like to ship overseas. About only way I could imagine would be to afix aluminum piece to wood, then shipping rates go sky high.
