1983 240 Classic - new owner

Hi there,

New member - just purchased a 1983 240 Classic. I would like to verify the year through the vin# though another post with a link where this can be done was dead.

Please let me know if anyone might have an idea where to verify - and where to add this model to the current registry!?

First of many thanks,

Dan

Vin

Welcome to the AIR Forums. You will find most information you want by using the search option on the top bar. Also under FORUMS in the upper left. a drop down menu will give you the motorhome threads.
This is what I believe you want today.

Hi Dan and welcome.

If you do a search on the 24' Classic you will realize that you are in fact a figment of your own imagination... You and your 24' Classic do not exist!
Ask Paula(Stespot), and she will confirm this...

Take a look here at Fred's site. This is a list of all models through the years of the Classic Motorhome.

Looking at your Photo of your rig, you do have the markings of a early 80's rig. You must have a special build unit. Airstream was know to make what ever you wanted if you had the money!

Just before leaving the previous owners place last week (an Airpark in Olympia WA) a very nice lady came out from the home next door and was almost in tears when she heard the MH was leaving for Canada - she said her parents owned this rig for near 20 years and confirmed it was a one of a kind special order - she told me that the original owner wanted a 24' and they did not have a chassis build so they used one from a build line of small busses at the factory.

I have found a couple 79's - an 82' but no others. I've now been noticing plenty of Argosy's but know nothing about them other than the obvious similarities.

Of course I have the registration which is clearly listed as 1983.

So I suppose it was truly a rare find. I wasn't even heading down to buy an Airstream, was a two day expedition to view two GMC's (Glennbrook and Sequoia) and this popped up for sale an hour before I happened to spot it. Drove it to the border the same day - have alway's been a fan but looking at 24's I didn't consider Airstream.

Certainly looking forward to this summer even more now.

Stespots 24'r is a 1982, with a 454/TH400, and rear bath.
I think they are Twins... seperated at birth!

Here is the link to Paula's story..

If the registration shows 1983, then the chassis is probably 1982...welcome, and we wait with bated breath(I always wondered about that expression...) for pictures!!! An explanation of that expression would also be appreciated...m

Welcome to the mystery 24' mh world

Oh my goodness......Keyair told me that we have a sibling......yes, we have a 1982 24' Airstream MH with a rear bath.......the sales brochure that was in our coach mentions when you drive your 28 or 31' mH, how happy you will be......nary a mention of a 24'. I purchased the 1982 service manual and it has no mention of the 24'.......so I purchased a 1979 service manual and it has mention of what stuff is where.....like the water tank is in the rear......not under the front streetside lounge.....

Ours is a rear bath model with two closets next and then refrigerator/galley/lounge/drivers seat on the street side. From the bath on the curb side there is the closet/lounge/door/swivel chair with credenza behind and then the passenger seat......

Wow, I can't believe you found yours on the west coast....I had to go all the way to Florida to retrieve our Sweet P.....and she is a cute little thing....please post pictures.....our photos are on Fred's Vintage Airstream site ---search 1982 and scroll to the bottom.....I can't wait to hear more about your find....have been to that airpark and tried to buy a mh there but missed out on it....thanks, paula

Hi Paula,

It seems the twins were separated - I did see yours online just after getting home with mine and began searching to try and verify the rareness - they seem completely identical other than upholstery and a hard spare tire cover on yours?

87,000 miles - recently rebuilt 454 - brand spakin' new Micheline E load tires - awning is like new - 4kw Onan runs like a top - everything works except for dash air though I'm told it only needs a belt, we'll see.

I was only able to find one 6" dent on the passenger front corner but not easy to notice.

I knew I'd found a creampuff and took the seller's word for most everything - one hour into my return trip I had a call that my wife was rushed to hospital (she's ok) so I put my foot in it and with the exception of Seattle traffic I bombed up to Blaine averaging 70mph - though at 75mph it rode just the same, just didn't want to push the rpm's on a rig I hadn't gone over as much as I would have liked. Handled all those bumpity-bumps on the I5 like a cloud.

I only have the pics from the ad and a few from my cell phone which I haven't downloaded yet - I'll be snapping many more this week after giving it a good wash.

The sellers husband had unfortunately lost his marbles recently which was why she was selling - he managed to mess up a few things on the rig but not too big a deal - in chasing down some roof leaks he decided to slather on some black roof patch gunk along the roof seams on the drivers side - I'll be reading up on how to address that but I've got under cover parking here at home.

ANYway - great to know I've found another 240 owner - too cool.

I've been an avid Landcruiser club member and have learned a great deal about those over the years - pretty excited about this new learning adventure!

Dan

New Photos

I was finally able to complete the Canadian registration and have spent the past couple of day's cleaning and tinkering. Very pleased with the overall condition and will be out in the wilderness sooner than I'd hoped. Pretty much all good to go.

... you mean the one shiny bit of skin - the PO had backed into a garage or something and had it repaired last year.

I've since removed the red tape numbers for the Airpark membership.. gotta love the ease of working with the aluminum vs paint..

Wow, she is a cutie

Great find....I think your rig is in better shape than mine.....sitting around in Florida is not good for an old Airstream......we are tackling the bathroom....argh....the old gold faucets are nasty.....and they connected them directly to the fresh water tank......no easy removal.....argh......glad to know you have such a sweet motorhome...keep the photos coming....paula

Dan,,
A BEAUTY!!! This link on the forums will be a lifesaver...it has been to all of us...well, yeah, your length is an anomaly, but most requirements are to be found here, and those that aren't can be surmised, speculated, or solved with a post. Congratulations on the best (and a sometimes frustrating) purchase that will change your lives...for the better...you know, when you break down, you can't just call a tow truck, but when she runs...well...you don't need one!!! See you down the road. m
