It just depends on what all they are including in the price. Thus, itemized estimate for parts n labor.

Depends

$1700 is too much if they are just replacing pads and lines. Add calipers, which you may want to do if they are old, and master cylinder and it becomes closer to reasonable. Getting in to the master cylinder and hydroboost unit in one of these is a struggle for any mechanic. In general though I would avoid having chassis work done at an RV service place, although it make take a lot of calling around, a 100 mile tow to a really good truck brake and safety shop might be a really good investment if they were interested in doing a good job.

Thank you so much for all of the great advice! I confirmed that they are replacing the master cylinder, so maybe not such a bad price apparently. They are doing the wheel bearings "while they are in there" but also because things got pretty heated up when there was metal on metal. I plan to drive it down in a few weeks, so I will document my progress.

Haha! Funny you say that because I also own a 1999 diesel cutter. Got it out of the freightliner dealer just last week and the invoice just about dropped me, $5,900! I bought it with an oil leak but holy hell, that was quite a surprise. Only silver lining is that I bought this rig with a partner, so all expenses split 50%.

If that is indeed the case, then that's not at all a bad price. In fact I would say it is a good deal.

OBoy.
Parts list and a labor list If your going to be taken you maybe can sniff it out first.
Look up parts on Rockauto.
Maybe your getting Gold Brake lines.
Just ask them what's up with the price and if he or she can't come up with a good reason that is understandable. It should not be a secret. You know what to do.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshet
