window troubles after Schlegel

Hello everyone, We have recently aquired a '76 Argosy 26' motorhome. After scouring the forums we found out what was a priority for repairs. This forum has been so useful for finding answers when we needed them. Thank you to all who contribute. One of our first jobs was to pull out all the old Schlegel, (the amount of sweat put into this requires that I capitalize Schlegel) clean, scrub, order, purchase, and then replace it. The problem now is that we cannot get the windows to shut fully because we can't get the Schlegel cut out of that little space the metal rod locks into, without pulling all the schlegel out. After putting all this effort in we can't figure out how to fix this... so, we're offering our firstborn child to anyone who can help us out of this fix. If you limit the amount of work it takes to fix it, we'll throw in the second child for free.
Thanks, Satia43's wife

Question, is your first born old enough to run a riding mower...?

Unfortunately I don't have the answer to your question but I'm close to doing the same replacement so I'm hoping someone chimes in with an answer.

When you figure it out let us know what you did.

Good luck!

Brad

Hmm, I might have to figure out your problem and then negotiate a deal for your 2nd born

I'm trying to understand your problem. I don't see a metal rod on my 28' 77 Argosy. Could you post a pic of your delima. Would a roto-zip style tool be useful in cutting away what you need. You might have to free hand it.

The metal rod is part of the latch. The problem was that the schlegel was catching when we tried to close the window fully and it would then try to rip out the schlegel when we opened it. Keith just kept trying stuff until something worked. The end result was a new cutting wheel on a Dremel. 1 1/4" and he cut out the bottom portion of the schlegel in the latch area.

Sorry Brad, We get to keep the "mower" boy. But to show our appreciation for your effort we'll give you the "doesn't do much" girl... better you than me!

Any chance of posting a picture of what Keith ended up doing? With two motorhomes to work on with all the windows needing repair any been there done that's would be great.

Geez, another kid How many of them do you have?!

I don't really have a need for a "doesn't do much" girl...

What I need most is someone to mow the lawn. Takes me 3 nights a week to mow when I'd rather be doing something else. Actually make that ANYTHING else

make that a 1 1/2" cutting wheel, dremel attachment. If I can figure out how to get the pictures to post here I'll do it. There was also a post called 'Vertical lip seal replacement - my way' that Keith said was right on the money for replacing the vertical lip seal on the outside of windows. I'm not sure exactly where it came from but it was in the forums. I print anything I might find useful later on and this was printed a while ago.
Also, for whomever cleans the windows prior to putting in the new stuff... remember 'Goof-Off' is your friend. I used 2 cans of the stuff, but ventilate, ventilate, ventilate.

If this doesn't work I apologize. You can't see much. These pictures are prior to the screen's going in. There are 2 pictures. In one picture you can see alot of the schlegel, at the latch, has been removed. It was one attempt and he took too much out. The other picture shows part of the schlegel removed, this is the way it worked best. If you have questions when you start - just message us and Keith can explain more. Good Luck!

Your windows latch different than the ones on my 77 Argosy.Glad to hear you guys came up with a solution. I still have most of my windows to do.Did one to make sure I knew how. and had the right stuff. Hardest part was getting the drain holesn cut in the schlegle without messing up the metal.

Ok here's the deal. I just replaced all of mine last week. When removing mine I noticed that the area where the pin latch is there was no schledge. Basically where the aluminum square latch attached to the glass goes intomthe frame there is and was no schledge in the 2 inch gap. I would pull it out at that spot and cut a 2 inch length out, the length of the latch then it will close properly. On ours after replacing all the schledge, 3 of the window latches were catching on the frame and wouldn't close properly. Upon further investigation I noticed that the new schledge made the window sitnout a little further in the frame. Soooo I filled down the sharp aluminum edge on the latch that was catching and they all close perfectly now! Also silcone spray is your friend, used this when installing , lifesaver

Also how does you outer gray colored seal fit against the glass? Got mine from inland rv and it fits terrible!!!!

It goes into the channel ok but the way it sits against the glass acts more like a rain catch than a shedding function. It also fits like crap around the rounded corners and is all buckled. So not happier with that. Will post pictures tomorrow. In the meantime any thoughts??

The gray gaskets must be held in place with either adhesive or Par Bond.

If the gasket, in any way, is compressed, it will buckle in the corners.

Andy have a look at the 3rd photo I posted, any explanation for that?

Also have a look at page 6 of my $120 argosy thread, there's a few more questions there for you

The photo's show too much material crammed into the channel.

There are only 4 pages on that thread.
