What are these holes for in the bumper?

My 74 Argosy 20' motorhome has 4 holes in the rear bumper right above the hitch. At first I thought some PO must have had something mounted there. But the more 74 & 75 Argosy motorhomes that I look at I've noticed a lot of them have these holes.

I've seen these holes on motorhomes with generators in the rear like mine and also on motorhomes within no compartment in the rear.

Anyone have any idea what they were originally used for?

My Argosy doesn't have any sort of ladder and never has.

Your comment caused me to note the portion of ladder on the back of the 75 Argosy. I have never seen a ladder like that before. Interesting although I don't think I would want one on my rig.

Thanks,

Brad

Would they line up with the holes on your license plate?

No. There is a license plate light and plate up on the left rear area of shell.

Richard, do you have any pictures of this mount?

I'm really curious as to what it looks like and also I wonder why everyone seems to take them off.

Thanks!

Brad

The unit in the picture has the spare mounted above. I would think that is factory? If it was originally for a spare tire mount on the bumper, it would probably interfere with the hitch.

For the Argosy motorhomes Airstream did have a spare tire mounting system available as an option but after looking at tons of Argosy pictures I have yet to find any one system that seems to consistent for the first two years of production. Most Argosy motorhome pictures I've seen don't have those 4 holes. I've only seen them on two or three and they have always been on the 74-75 models.

The bottom picture is my motorhome and it came with the drawbar shown and what looks like the remains of what might have at one time been a spare tire carrier. I have no idea if it was original or not.
