Weird metal sheets under carpet.
So in true to myself form, since it's too cold to work on the engine today I'm inside ripping the interior out. Under the carpet in the front section with the seats im finding this odd metal sheet, very flexible and heavy. Is that normal? Sound deadening? Is there a better product which allows me to remove this garbage?

Looks like lead flashing to me. Maybe they used it as a heat shield?

Is that lead sheet as might be used for sound deadening?
These folks seem to have some products. Never used them, so?

My first thought was lead also, Heat sheild? no tin would be better and why between carpet and wood? Sound? Doubt that too but who knows, was the carpet original install?

I think it's at least some kind of lead alloy, it is much more flexible than tin and really heavy for it's thickness. The carpet doesn't seem original and I'm guessing that because the subfloor consists of two layers of plywood. I assume that originally it only had one. I don't think I'm going to put it back in when I recover the plywood. Does anyone have a link or a reference to a comprehensive how-to for tips and tricks to renovating interiors? I love the forum but sifting through 50 page threads just isn't time efficient sometimes.

A couple of questions as the picture doesn't give me an orientation for where in the Argosy you found the metal sheet; was it in the cockpit area or in the front living area? Was that the only piece?
Your subfloor if I'm not mistaken should be one layer of 1/2 plywood, at least that was in Brad's Argosy; not the 5/8 plywood found in Airstream motorhomes, but things have been known to be different even in same model years. It sounds like someone found the old subfloor very soft and decided to add another layer. If it were me I'd rip out both layers and replace with Coosa board 26 if you do have a 1/2" subfloor.
As for sound deadening and an underlay, this I used and found to be great.

If you can't get the Torly's product I'm sure a flooring place could find something similar for you.
Cheers

The metal sheeting is covering the entire "cockpit" area. If it doesn't seem really familiar I'm going to go ahead and remove it. I also need to investigate my subfloor a little more. There are some soft corners in this second layer so it really all needs redone. I'll definitely be replacing it with something a little more exterior grade. That Coosa board looks great but it sure is expensive!

Hi
It's a good bet that that is lead. These days lead is considered a nasty material. You will need to be a bit careful about how you dispose of it.

A metals recycler will pay you for it.

Hi
.....and the local recycling depot will likely charge you to accept it.
It's a strange world out there.
