Now you have my attention. I've been scheming for some time to get a roadster over here but haven't made the leap yet. There are some loop holes that can be exploited but also some risk involved. I do believe it can be done but right now I have a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk being restored and just don't have the time or money to play with a roadster. On the other hand I have not given up on the idea.

I have the option on a 'non-running' Roadster in the UK (for around $1500) and wondering if I could pull/scrap the engine, ship it as a kit car and replace the engine with one from another Smart when it arrives?

Importing as a kit car requires letters from the kit car manufacturer and approvals to make it work. That is an old loophole that has been pretty much closed. But I like that you are thinking.
