Stupid MH Propane Questions, 1977 24'

Howdy from Ignoramusland:

I can only find one propane tank underneath on the curb side. I cannot get the yellow cap off of it. I am clueless, as my previous Argosys and Airstreams were all trailers with external, removable tanks.

Who knows if the gauges are accurate, but the inside panel gauge says that one tank is empty and the other 1/2 full. I got the stove to light but cannot get the fridge to go cold.

Where are the tanks? What should I do to see that they are safe, functioning, etc.?

Your Argosy will only have one tank and its permanently fixed to the truck chassis. It's likely to be a 50 or 65 lb tank. So if you've found a propane tank that's it, that's all you have.

Motorhome propane tanks are not like those on trailers, they are not removable and lay horizontal instead of vertical. The tank itself will have a built in level gauge on the side that you can read. There may a remote sender attached to the level gauge and you can identify it because it will have a wire attached to it. You should be able to read the gauge even with the remote sender attached. Also the gauge on the tank itself should be pretty accurate. The remote sender could be bad giving false readings inside.

Since you aren't sure about the condition of your propane system I would recommend you take it to a qualified shop and have them check it out.

Here's a picture of what the gauge on the tank should look like. The remote sender is held in place by two small screws. However you'll notice the little red pointer 10 o'clock position. That is the local tank gauge and should be fairly accurate.



By the way, that's a very nice looking 24' Argosy! Post more pictures of it when you get a chance.

OK, I cannot get that yellow cap open. How does this thing get filled - at an RV place? Can you post more photos of propane fixtures with notes on their function? Thank you SO much for your time and help.

I will go try to figure out where to post more photos. Still not sure about getting around correctly on this site.

I believe the yellow cap unscrews. You will need to drive to a propane distributor or an RV place that fills tanks. Some gas stations can perform the service as well. Check the yellow pages in your area for propane services.

This is how the process will look while filling your tank. The tech will stick the filler nozzle where the yellow cap is on your tank.

Does the yellow cap have left hand threads like the propane bottles. Maybe you are turning the wrong way?JCW

That's a good question. I'm not 100% certain but I think the filler valve has a left hand POL thread on the inside.

Elisa, you might try turning the yellow cap the other way. Later this evening I'll wander down to my shop and see what mine has.

The yellow cap on the propane tank should turn counter clockwise. Same as any standard nut.
