Made a little more progress on prepping the leaks in the roof. Just need to cut the antenna wire shorter and poke it down the hole. A small 4" square patch should work nicely.

The rotater arm on the antenna was frozen in place so in order to get to the two pop rivets underneath the arm I had to cut it off.

Ernie brought the left rear banana wrap over for a check out. Looks pretty good. He's going to do a little more finish work and it will be ready to install.

And lastly the radiator is now sitting in place. Still have to bolt it place, hook up the hoses, fasten the fan shroud and reconnect the oil filler tube and dipstick tube. It went in a lot easier with two people compared to when I removed it by myself

Roof Leak Pictures from Yesterday

The first picture of round hole in the seam obviously wasn't there originally.

The original TV antenna was a Braund Skyliner. That antenna folded down against a bracket and then at location raised up with extended elements like a typical house outdoor TV antenna. The "mystery" hole may have been one of the holes where the antenna support bracket was riveted to the roof. After being raised, the interior handle "popped" down and rotated the antenna. The antenna lead wire was 300 ohm twin lead wire entering the coach under the small rectangular "patch". The lead wire came out inside the coach in a TV jack on the wall to the right of the kitchen window. The factory liberally sealed all of the antenna rivets with Vulken.

I noticed recently that Andy's Inland RV has shrouds for these older Armstrong AC units.

Argosy TV Antenna

Brad,
Attached is a bad picture of the Argosy TV Antenna. The mystery hole is not related to the bracket that I can tell

That antenna sure did require a lot of roof penetrations! I've got the two big ones patched now and will be looking at the support bracket mounting holes this week. I glanced at them and they appeared to be sealed but I'll give them a closer look soon.

Thanks for the pic!

I spent a good part of yesterday climbing up and down the ladder working on the two main openings created by the antenna. While I was making the patch for the large drive mechanism I decided to use a small patch and just plug each of the outer rivet holes with individual Olympic rivets. I felt a smaller patch would be more appropriate. The only problem I had was my rivet gun kept jamming. I think it probably jammed on me 8 to 10 times. Each time I had to climb down the ladder to fix the gun. Annoying to say the least! Only thing left is to shave the rivets and for the moment that task is pretty low on the priority list.

Over the last few days whenever the heat of the day got to bad to be out in the sun I tinkered with the fabrication of the cockpit seat to pedestal adapters. Just need to sand blast and paint the lower portion of the seat pedestals and the seats will be ready to install in the cockpit, that is whenever the wood floors are finally replaced

And here's another shot of the new AC condenser. It definitely looks huge now that the radiator is back in place. If that doesn't help the air conditioner keep things cool up front I'm not sure what would

Ok, need some help! Ernie finished up the left rear banana wrap and we were doing a test fit and found a definite interference with waste drain pipe.

The waste drain pipe seems to be up a good 2" or so higher than it should be where it comes in contact with the banana wrap. Looking the following picture of when Peanut first arrived at my place you can see whoever replace the broken valance used some thin aluminum sheeting that doesn't reach all the way to the bottom of the shell and the waste pipe is touching the aluminum.

Here's what the drain piping looks like right now.

My guess is whenever the banana wrap got busted up the waste piping suffered the same fate. So, can anyone provide me with some pictures from various angles of their waste drain piping and how it fits in relation to the banana wrap?

I'm going to have to do something to the waste piping but it sure would be handy to see how it's supposed to be!

Thanks!

Brad

Drain Looking Aft

Another picture. The sewer pipe is something that I added years ago to store the drain hose outside. It goes in with a 90 degree turn above the drain plumbing and stops. There is just enough room to store the drain hose there instead of some place inside.

Looks like it has been replaced from the gate valves out.

When I removed the external pull handles (for the gate valves), one was not attached, and it looked like the two small retaining screws had pulled out....maybe related to the banana wrap getting damaged?

The parts donor (which donated the banana wrap) definitely has the outlet lower.

But the manual layout doesn't show any down turns in the pipework.

So that seems to suggest the tanks or the outlets from the tanks are higher?????

Gregg, thanks for the pictures, they help a lot. I like your idea for drain hose storage.

Martin, I was looking at that piping diagram last night expecting to see some down turns in the pipe where it ran under the banana wrap and was surprised when I didn't. There has definitely been some rework to Peanut's waste pipes. I think other than time I doubt that it will be difficult to make the needed changes.

With luck all that would be needed is a 45 degree fitting at the end of the wye. That might provide enough clearance for the banana wrap.

If the ABS housing from the donor that covers the pipes is still laying around you might latch onto it. It may not fit Peanut right now but later it could possibly be fitted.

Drains

Brad and Martin,
What I remember from the occasions that I have had the drain cover off is the diagram in the manual appears correct except that each joint was slightly mis-aligned as they were glued. In the end the glued up pipe configuration angled downward like in the first photo that I posted.

In other words an intentionally sloppy install

An intentional sloppily installation is what it looks like.

The vertical vent pipe in the diagram penetrates the roof in the right rear. At the roof penetration, the vent pipe is sealed by a rubber gasket on the outside surface of the roof. As the rubber degrades with age, it can leak water down the vent pipe into the rear closet. You can inspect the vent gasket by removing the vent cover and inspecting the gasket.

Out of ignorance the drain diagram is nicely detailed. I don't have any coach service information. What is the source of that diagram?

The diagram is from the owners manual.

In my opinion, the 1977/78 Owners Manual is one of the best that was produced, but even a low resolution scan is 20mb and too large to attach here.

I will email you a link to my Google Drive Gregg so you can either have a read or download your own copy.

A little more progress made on Peanut today

I'm happy to say the rear panel has now been replaced. Took about four hours for Ernie and I to put the insulation in and get the panel riveted in place.

All that's left is to have the rivets shaved and the panel wiped down one last time with lacquer thinner.

Martin has opted to ditch the existing doghouse cover and switch to the same style used in Bella (i.e. 74-76 Argosies). Since I converted my 74 doghouse cover to the style used in the later Classics that meant I had my old one as a spare.

Bella.

I've prepped the opening by cutting out the excess sheet from the sides of the original doghouse frame.

Hopefully sometime this week the fab shop can bend up some sheet metal for the side and back walls to frame in the opening properly.

On a slightly different topic, yesterday I rough cut the new flooring sections to size. I don't want to install the new flooring until the doghouse opening is finished.

Today I managed to replace the rusted and cracked transmission cooling lines. Since I changed to a 4L80e transmission my original cooling lines were no longer needed. It wasn't exactly a pleasant experience removing the old tubes and installing the new tubes but the job is done

The only remaining task before trying to start the engine is the power steering reservoir needs to be mounted to the firewall and a new hose ran from the reservoir to the power steering pump. The hose should be in this week so with luck Peanut might be running next weekend or shortly there after.
