Prior to removal the fuel line, the throttle rod, and a wire to the electric choke has to be disconnected. With the carb/manifold assembly removed, there is more clearance on top to lift the genset for removal. Also if need be, the exhaust header can also be unbolted in a similar way. Many times these old "green monsters" can be cleaned up and become great AC generators.

Although Brad has the BF that was in Peanut running, it literally has no mounts/mounting tray as it was swinging on a ratchet strap, when it arrived. As a set of vibration mounts (not including the tray) is over $200, Brad strongly encouraged me to try and get the generator out of the donor to see if the mountings, or even the whole generator could be used. Especially as it has a Hobbs generator hour meter that is showing only 140 hours run time. So the next task is to try and do a run down to Brad's later this week with a truck load of 'Peanut parts'.

We can look the generators over but my guess is the donor genset would likely be the better choice for Peanut.

One thing to look for on the donor would be the remote start stop switch. New they are $30. I haven't looked yet to see where the one in Peanut is located but it can't hurt to have a spare at that price!

Brad and Martin,

My vibration isolator a required replacement. I went to the Cummings Onan distributor nearby here in Arlington and purchased 3 each part number 402-0284 for $11.21 each plus tax. I later obtained a parts manual for the BF series which indicates that I should have purchased 2 each 402-0283 (engine end) and 1 each 402-0284 (generator end). I understand that "0283" isolators are about $18.00. It is my understanding that difference is the rubber durometer for the heavier engine end. The old original ones had relaxed to the point that the generator was resting on the baseplate and transferring vibration out to the rest of the chassis. Bottom line is that $200 for the isolators sounds a little high.

Also attached is a picture of my 4.0 BF. The 4.0 BFA had some refinements like an oil filter and a slightly different carburetor (I think). Also an additional shroud around the exhaust header.

Here is the second picture of my 4.0 BF as installed. It appears that if there is not enough clearance to install and remove the generator, then the carburetor/intake manifold can easily be removed for additional clearance.

Sorry I just discovered that the photos posted upside down.
The replacement fuel pump is made by Facit which I purchased locally from a Facit distributer. Replacement fuel pumps from Onan also come from Facit.

Thanks for info Greg.

The reason the cost of the mounts is so high is Peanut doesn't have the upper and lower parts that the vibration mounts seat into. Brad has the part numbers but I remember one (either top or bottom) was over $30, it soon adds up when there is nothing there.

Wow, the remaining items looked almost like hardware store items. I didn't realize they were made of gold. I have found that parts from Onan have a premium price. Hence the Facit fuel pump (same part number as from Onan) obtained from a local distributer for less cost.

I had picked up a set of mounts from an Emerald to see if they will work as well....one way of another either the original BF or the donor BFA will go back in there!

Gregg, I quoted the $200 based on what I remember seeing for my Emerald III generator. Turns out the isolation mounts are totally different. I was shocked when I saw the prices Onan wanted for the Emerald! I just assumed that the generators used the same mounting arrangements.

I think the BFA uses the same basic mounts as the BF which means replacements will be reasonably priced.

Actually the remaining parts are hardware store items. The fun part is trying to figure out just what parts you need. Peanut didn't have any mounting hardware which was why I was hoping Martin could get them from the donor. Less guessing involved!

Those mounts would require fairly large holes in the mounting pan. If they don't work for the BF or BFA I'll buy them for the Emerald III that I'm installing in my Argosy

Took a break yesterday evening from trimming the fence line to install the power steering high pressure hose.

The original style of hose is no longer available and the replacement that's being sold in it's place doesn't really fit well. The only alternative was to have a section of hydraulic hose cut to fit with special ends that clamp on to the existing end sections of the old hose.

The NAPA clerk swears this sort of repair is done all the time and works fine. Since it was the only option I had available that's what I went with

Everything seemed to tighten up ok which is a good sign. The only issue is the hose rubs against underside of the floor frame work. I'll add some sort of padding in that area which should take care of any long term rubbing issues.

I need to install the two suction/return hoses to the power steering pump, install the v-belts and once those are done Peanut is ready for the radiator to be installed.

Before the radiator can be installed I need to fabricate new electric fan brackets and if I get a chance I'll tackle that project this weekend in between doing test runs on my Argosy engine!

Brad

Are you re-purposing those military satellites again Brad? Or is it just the Google Earth have re-done the images in your area?

The first question I can neither confirm nor deny

As for the second question, Google Earth apparently now has better image resolution than NASA does.

Google does better than this picture as well when you get closer to the big cities. Out in the country they don't provide the same resolution

What a nice location you have there.

When you've lived in cities and suburbs all your life it's always interesting to see the pictures others post.

Sometimes I see the driveways, the grassy spreads, the barn and structures and more country living and wonder/dream.

I digress, nice spot.

Thanks! It is a nice property. It does require a lot of mowing but it's one of the more peaceful quiet places I've every lived.

Finally (and by that I mean after spending approx 80 hours and numerous broken tools), the bumpers are off the parts donor.

Along with all the original seat mounts, and belts (for both the drivers, passengers and barrel cab seats).

Along with the generator and many other parts.

Next stop is renting a Uhaul to get them all down to Brad's!
