Where the map used to be located he used the DA sander with various grits of paper and then used the buffer with the F9 grit and this is what it looks like now.

I believe he also used the DA sander on the door and then the buffer.

Next update will likely be Monday or Tuesday, he said something about his arms needing a break

Looking great Brad. Any photos of the drivers side?

Looks like the new front quarter aluminium is polishing up as well as the original?

Nothing's changed on the drivers side since he finished stripping the paint off back on the 12th. Right now he's been working in the mornings on the passenger side which is mostly in the shade during that time frame. Once he starts on the drivers side we will likely turn Peanut around so he can continue to work in the shade.

I was a little nervous about the new quarter panel when you decided to polish! It does seem to be polishing out the same as the original skin. It's overcast today so I should be able to get better pictures of the passenger side.

Martin and I have been having a discussion on some of Peanut's skin imperfections. The three horizontal lines in the first picture appear to be possible tree branch scratches. However I'm almost inclined to think they were there from the factory and are really marks introduced during the manufacture of the Argosy. The holes just to the left are from the awning mount and will be covered with a patch plate once Ernie gets farther along with the polishing.

I think the chances of something naturally making three parallel marks is pretty slip Brad....looks more like the types of marks you get as sheet material runs over rollers either in manufacturing the sheet or in moving it.

Material handling scrapes are what they remind me of. It will be interesting to see how well they can be polished out.

Did you notice the scratches when it was painted?

These? I have a couple, I bet they could be sanded lightly.

How is he going to polish the rivets? The wool pad won’t get in there

There's a good chance the bulk of the scratches can be removed. However some portions are fairly deep. I'm sure a lot of sanding will be involved.

I'm not sure how he's working around the rivets. I'll have to ask.

How many hours does Fred have into buffing peanut? I am about to buff my caramel next month. Wondering what I got ahead of me in terms of hours.

Fred? You mean Ernie

My best guess is he's between 30 and 35 hours polishing so far. This doesn't count the hours to strip the paint. A lot of those polishing hours are dealing with scratches. He showed me a section today where the scratches had been greatly reduced to almost nothing by using a different technique with different media.

Here's an example of the revised technique that Ernie has started using. I guess this would be considered phase 1 polishing still.

Do you think Ernie could post a ‘guide to stripping, buffing and polishing’ once he has worked to kinks out?

I'll ask but they could be trade secrets

We've been having thunderstorms frequently in the mornings which hinders his work time. Once it gets past 10:30 or 11 am it's starts to get too hot and humid to do this kind of work outside. At least that's what he's been telling me.....

Ernie is right. There is a sweet spot for the temps to polish. I would say 68 to 75 degrees. I never had any luck working i the direct sunlight. Always work in the shade and don't waste your time when the temp gets above 80 it just makes a mess.
