I am definitely interested in making a replacement. The heavy lamp assembly in mine has contributed to severe cracking to the point that I have applied reinforced strapping tape to preclude the lamp from falling out. Originally when mine was new the ABS flexed a lot rolling down the road. In our Texas heat the ABS is so brittle that it easily crumbles. Also the ABS has yellowed. When new it was difficult to tell the difference between the light colored ceiling panels and the ABS.

As the thought process evolves keep in mind that a replacement in fiberglass will require that the curve of the wall/ceiling be a permanent feature of the replacement part. My guess is the ABS panel was flexible enough when new that it was probably made flat and just laid into position and was flexible enough to do so.

I don't think I would have any problem coming up with a pattern of the curve, but I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about that aspect. The other issue is Ernie would have to spend the time to rebuild/repair the existing panel to use as a plug in during the mold making process.

Food for thought.

I think the mold making process would be different this time Brad

On the valance the shop took a mold from the outside of your part, then cast replacements from inside that mold.

This time I think the mold would be from inside the current part, and then the replacements would be taken from the outside.

This opens the chance of using something like a urethane resin or silicone mold (poured into the current part). It should then peel out and let a fiberglass part be cast off of it. As long as the silicone mold is held in the correct curvature when cast then the fiberglass part would fit.

Since the Argosy I'm purchasing from Don is a northern truck, maybe its interior parts will be in better shape for a mold.

I'd be willing to ante up the parts for any endeavour.

Cheers

Unfortunately the 24' Argosy does not have this particular ABS panel installed. I don't know that it's unique to the 20 but it might be.

Dane, I know for certain your 74 doesn't have this panel. As far as I know it started being used in 77.

Friday and Sunday I spent a few minutes tinkering with Peanut's headlights. I'm in the process of installing the same LED bulbs that Mayco used.

One of problems with the original headlight buckets was the top adjusting screw on the drivers side bottom bulb had stripped threads. The adjuster was some sort of custom job from Airstream so I ended up removing an adjuster from the donor parts and riveting it into Peanut's bucket.

With the adjuster in place I was able to install the new replacement steel bulb holders. Both the driver and passenger side bulb holders were rusted beyond repair so replacements had previously been ordered.

I did follow WayneG's lead and drilled the large hole in the bulb holders to account for the breather cap on the LED bulb. I still need to add the holes to the upper bulb holders but the bottom holders are done.

Possibly later this week I'll be testing Peanut's wiring for the first time. So if you see a mushroom cloud on the horizon you'll know the cause....

Tinkered with Peanuts Headlights as well after work.

The wiring in each bucket is now working and configured correctly for the new LED bulbs. Hopefully this weekend I can install the bulbs

I was a little surprised by the headlights when in low beam mode. Seems odd that not all the LEDs are lit but that seems to be the case. The headlights still need to be aimed so when it goes to the shop for a new exhaust system I'll have them align the headlights as well.

I'll have to get some night photos one of theses days and post them.

Are you sure there aren't marker/side light, low and high beam modes Brad?

I'm fairly certain they are connected correctly. The GM factory configuration only turned the lower bulb on when high beam was selected.

The bulbs have a ground, low and high connections. In the factory configuration either the low or the high is on, not both at the same time. In fact the lower bulb only has a ground and high beam connection. The low beam wire is not there.

Next time Mike reads this thread maybe he can comment as to what bulbs are on with low beam and high beam and if on low beam are only some of the LEDs are turned on on the upper bulb.
