Peanut's been laying somewhat dormant for the last month or so but Ernie and I finally got the opportunity to get a few more things done. Both bumpers are now fitted

I haven't tightened the mounting bolts down yet as I'm sure the bumpers will have to come off a time or two as we fit the valances in place. Martin opted to use the extended front bumper assembly from the donor. The bumper now makes a great platform to stand on for cleaning the windows!

While Ernie was doing most of the work on the bumpers I've been working on the cockpit floor boards. The replacement wood sections are done and coated with several coats of Spar Urethane. I've cut out replacement aluminum sheeting that goes under the wood floors. And I've removed the drivers side original aluminum sheet and am prepping the metal framework to accept the new aluminum sheet. I'm hoping to have the drivers side floor done in the next day or so and the passenger side next weekend. We'll see

Looking good Brad!

Maybe both Peanut and your Argosy will be on the road for the motorhome get together!

Mine might be driveable by then but the odds of being able to drive it to the get together are pretty slim. In Kentucky, to license a motorhome it has to be inspected by the fire department first. I'm pretty sure there's no way mine will pass that inspection!

Seriously? With so many systems and subsystems in a modern day motorhome, what fire department would want the liability of inspecting and passing these vehicles? How many fire departments have been sued as RV's have gone up in flames after a recent inspection?

How much is the inspection?

Cheers

Seems like a good reason to register it when 'empty'; they can hardly fail it if there are no systems on-board!

If its a "one time inspection" and not annual or something

It was 8+ years ago I had to take the 310 in for inspection when we moved it from Arkansas to Kentucky. Thinking back the inspection was done at one of the local campgrounds that was "certified" to make the inspection. If I remember correctly it was upwards of $50 to get the inspection done. All he did was look around inside, checked to see that I had a current fire extinguisher and stuck a label on the outer skin right beside the door. All told it took about 15 minutes. $50 for 15 minutes work, not bad....

I've thought about doing that but my concern is if they see it has been stripped then what kind of inspection would they require once I re-installed all of the systems?!

I've even toyed with the idea of getting plates for it in Arkansas which is where the current title is. But then I'd have to deal with insurance issues and who knows what else.

It's pretty much a no win situation

It's not an annual inspection, it's only when transferring a vehicle into Kentucky that is titled somewhere else.

I might stop by the place I had the 310 inspected to find out what my options are.

Today Peanut finally looks like an Argosy, at least from the front

I can safely say installing a lower banana wrap is a real pain in the.....it didn't help that the replacement banana wrap was about 10" to long. It took a long time to get it trimmed down to the right length and contour. We figured better to take a little at a time rather than try to cut it all off at once and miss!

In between helping Ernie with the banana wrap I managed to get the drivers side floor in fastened in place. There's still some cleanup work to do with the inner wall, installing the battery box and who knows what else but at least there's a floor on the drivers side

Tomorrow I'm going to try and get the battery box installed. Right now Peanut's stuck where he's at until the box is finished. I'm a little hesitant right now to install it because I would like to fabricate some sort of battery hold down system and I can't do that if the box is installed. I'll figure something out....

Peanut now has a battery box. It took me a while but I finally figured out a way to reinforce the box opening. I framed it with 3/16" and 1/4" aluminum bar and then used stainless screws to hold it in place. Seems to be real solid. I also figured out how to add a battery hold down bar which is now installed as well.

Still to do is running the battery cables into the box and rivet the door back on.

Looking great Brad. Are you going to have to make the battery cables up in place or can they be bought ready made?

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the two new batteries the shop installed in Florida are usable!

Yes, I'll have to make up the cable ends inside the battery box. On the battery cables I'll be installing ring terminals that will allow the cables to bolt directly to the side posts of the batteries. I have a crimper for the large diameter terminals which will make that job a lot easier

I know one of the two batteries is still good as that's what I've been using to start Peanut off and on. I'm pretty sure I put the other battery on the charger once this past winter so it should be just fine as well. I'll go ahead and trickle charge both of them before I move them into the battery box.

Lookin good Brad! That battery box looks like a big improvement over the flimsy plastic box that Airstream used. What did you do underneath the plywood to protect it from the tire spray?

Originally there was a .030" sheet of aluminum that was under the wood floor. This sheet was severely rotted away and didn't actually cover the entire piece of wood. I used a section of .040" interior skin from the 345 I scrapped and cut it to fit the actual opening. At a minimum it's as least as good as Airstream provided and I think in reality it's a lot better

Well, no more playing Fred Flintstone with Peanut, he now has cockpit floors

Since the passenger side is easier to access installing the new floor was a little bit easier. Not having to work around the steering wheel and pedals really helped.

Getting the floors in placed allowed me to install the side walls for the new doghouse cover. I have a little bit of welding to do on the doghouse frame and my welder is too big and awkward to try and roll it around on gravel so tomorrow weather permitting I'm hoping to turn Peanut around so I can move it right up to the shop door so the welding leads can reach.

I originally thought the battery box would lay on the cockpit floor once it was installed but that turned out not to be the case.

The box is mounting in the same mounting holes as it was originally so I was a little surprised at the angles. Due to the weight of the batteries I'm going to slip a piece of wood under the box to support the box.

Spring is really coming early this year!

I had the very same circumstance with my plastic battery box. I used cedar door shims and a little construction adhesive. I think I put a shim at each end of both batteries. Just slide the shims in opposite directions until it is snug and wait for the glue to dry, then trim them off with a utility knife.
