oil for rear end
Hi all. Just wondering what type of oil and how much goes in the rear end. 76 Argosy 28'. P30. How do you get the old oil out. Pump it?
Thanks John

Sorry to say I'm not certain of the capacity but I know the best way to drain is to crack the seal of the differential. I just replaced my diff. fluid with synthetic when we pulled the axles to install new rear rotors.

Most technicians just loosen the bolts enough to get it to drain and tighten everything back up and put in fresh oil. It's heavy enough, and unpressurized, so that it's fairly tolerant of gasket problems.
On the other hand the old school method is to remove the diff cover in order to take the opportunity to wipe out any gelatinous goo that may have accumulated over time with a solvent-soaked rag, and clean up the diff cover and install it with a new gasket.

Yup, what Jammer said! Clean it out and put on a new gasket then refill with synthetic and forget it.

While you have the cover off if the old oil is pretty nasty you might also want to check the wheel bearings. The same oil runs out the axle tubes to lubricate the wheel bearings which are much happier running in clean oil.
Just as a point of interest I just had new bearings put in my differential and rear wheels. When I went to pay the tab I was informed that mine was the first rear axle they had ever seen that did not have the specified bearings in the wheel hubs. They read the axle number stamped on the axle tube and ordered all the bearings. When they pulled the hubs the new bearings were too small. They checked several of their references and they all called for the same bearings that were too small.
It was not a problem getting the correct bearings but they had never seen it before. They gave me the correct numbers in case I had a problem in the future I could at least save some confusion. The interesting thing is who did it or why did it have oversize bearings in the first place. Maybe Airstream had a better idea.
Cheers, Dan

90 weight gear lube. There are synthetic flavors, but it has been 90 weight forever. Take the advice given above and drain then refill. It should take 2-3 quarts to fill it depending on the size and capacity of the pig, maybe 4.

oil for rear end
I agree with everyone above. Remove cover clean with safety solvent be sure there has been no water present in the rear axle and replace with SAE 90 Gear Oil per the Chev manual. Permatex on old gasket will usually reseal cover if it is put up clean. I prefer to change oil in Rear axle every 3 years or 50,000 miles whichever comes first.

Mine is also on a P30 chassis (1977). My owners manuals specificies 5.4 pints (Chevy) or 7.2 pints (Dana). It also says to change the rear axle lube every 12,000 miles; use GL-5 Gear Lubricant; in Canada use SAE 80, for other areas with outside temperature below 10F - SAE 80, below 100F - SAE 90, above 100F consistently - SAE 140
