I called around and the cheapest price is $539. Some other shop told me they start around 600 for a small car and would probably be in the 1k range. BJR quoted the 539 so I will probably just go with them since my buddy uses them for his shop. This is going to sting a little...

I was thinking in the $450 range so I wasn't to far off the mark.

It's a bummer you have to fix it but better now than while being out of town somewhere.

Hey everyone, I am starting to work on my Argosy again and try to stay active in the community! My wife has finally healed up after surgery and is back to work so I am slowly starting to catch up on projects around the house. We took the Argosy to the 1000 Islands region of NY this weekend and had a blast.

One thing I want to address on my Argosy is the v belt system on the motor. I hate it. It seems like every trip I lose a belt. In May I lost the alternator belt, July I lost the AC belt and this weekend I lost the PS/fan belt. Heres what I am thinking of doing, so please provide some feedback! I had a 1992 chevy 1 ton truck with a 454. That motor was stripped down and put into my little hotrod boat. I still have all of the brackets and accessories from the front of the motor, which all ran off of a serpentine belt. Has anyone does this conversion before? Will I still have all of the correct bolt holes? Does anyone see any drawbacks from doing this? On the bright side I will be able to use the newer style AC compressor so I should be able to take the AC lines and condensor from a 90s chevy truck and bolt it right into my Argosy.

Matt, I'm glad to hear things are getting back to normal! I still need to get that valve in the mail. Real soon now....

I'm not sure why you're having so much trouble with your v-belts. It might be they aren't installed in the right order or are out of alignment. The 345 I dismantled had a hybrid serpentine/v-belt setup that I considered using but in the end I decided I liked the v-belt arrangement better. Personal preference I guess

Here is the sequence I use for installing belts. The belt lengths might be different for your setup but the installation sequence should be the same.

1st - (7410) PS to Crank (Tension PS pump first using 1/2" ratchet connected to top of PS pump bracket)

2nd - (7603) A/C to PS to Crank to WP (Tension after PS pump has been tensioned, Tension via long screw on top of A/C pump mount)

3rd - (7470) Alt to WP to Crank (Tension Alt via top mounting bracket, Reminder: Lower alternator bolt is accessible form underneath right front wheel well)

Hmm I should probably send you some funds for that valve, shouldn't I?

Nice to hear from you again Matt. It was a pleasure meeting the both of you in PA this spring.

I'm not going to say no you can't, but based on my experience of owning Toyota Tercel hatchbacks 1987-88 and 89 it never ceased to amaze me, how many differences there were from model year to model year; not even going to mention the mid year changes in the 88. Yes the car body didn't change, but practically everything else changed, even exhaust systems.

Yes, both engines are 454, but other than that, all bets are off. If I were you, I'd sign up to a Chevy engine forum somewhere.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Cheers
Tony

Might be best if you wait until it shows up

Your 1st belt, does that not go around the water pump? I am 99% sure that all 3 of my belts go around the water pump pulley.

Yep, first belt only goes from the crank pulley to the power steering pump pulley. My 310 had it that way and that's how I set up the Argosy.

I don't have the alternator belt installed in this picture but you can see the power steering pump to crank pulley belt.

Thanks for that image. I will pick up a new belt and try it that way.
