Dipstick for 1975 Argosy Motorhome...

Hello Gang -

I'm in need of a dipstick for a 1975 Argosy Motorhome with a 454. I've tried the local truck parts and chevy dealer and they say the part has been discontined. Any ideas on where to get such an animal?

Take Care,
Al

I know of a few politicians that would qualify. Actually, more than a few.

Salvage yard? There were a lot of 454s produced. Something should be available.

Streamlean, glad you brought this topic up. We're in the process of installing a 454 into our 20' Argosy and I never thought about the dipstick tube issue. The motorhome currently has a 350 from a dually pickup in it and we're installing a 454 from another dually that we had. Unfortunately neither of those engines have the correct dipstick/tube.

I guess I need to add one more thing to the list that I need to find

Brad

Speaking of dipsticks on the 454. I have a 1978 Argosy with 454 engine. Can anyone give me a hint on pushing the four foot long dipstick back in to the hole. I have to use a pair of pliers and push about two inches at a time to get it back into the hole. Is there an easier way?????

On our 1984 310 with a 454 the dipstick is easy to pull out and push back in. However on our old SOB motorhome the dipstick was a bear to get back in, much as you're describing.

I'd definitely be intersted in finding out if there are ways to prevent that from happening to our 310.

tn 2: on my 454 the dipstick doesn't show that it was ever damaged and outside tube is secure but i also need pliers so as not to damage dipstick.

Hi Al -

Try going to a GM dealer (if your is mounted on a GM truck chassis) and find someone who has been in parts for a while. Most of the part numbers on the chassis have changed 2 or 3 times over the decades and they are probably looking for the wrong part number (the original ones have been replaced).

My wife and I flew out to Raleigh, NC to purchase a 1975 26' Argosy. As I drove away the previous owner said that I didn't have any emergency brakes, so I knew that I needed new back brake pads.
I was trying to replace my back brakes in Raleigh, NC at a commercial location. They were unable to obtain brake pads in less than a week, maybe,(the most common ones in the US) until I found a wonderful woman in parts in the Durham, NC GM dealership. She had been there 30 years and knew exactly why we had been unable to get parts. She tracked down the new part numbers, ordered the parts and had them delivered in less than an hour.

If that doesn't work, try Mike at JEGS: (800)345-4545

Good luck. Peter
