difficult question

I change my transmission TH400 with a new one, I found yesterday driving my Argosy that the speedometer reads wrong, discovered in google I have to change my gear speedometer, I found on google there are different colors for each color corresponds to the amount of teeths. and now comes the difficult question.
the color of gear in the transmission is the same colo geaer in my speedometer?
or as few teeth I know I need to get my speedometer measure correctly?

No surprise! I'm thinking about changing the MG four speed transmission to a European Ford five speed. All available as a kit with bell housing, clutch, drive shaft, the works. Except for a recalibrated speedometer.

unfortunately the old transmission can not recover, was destroyed, so now I have this big problem
Here's the technical service we have to do every 2 years controlled my speedometer and if not in order not give me approval to circulate
I was thinking of placing an electronic speedometer, but the truth not as an official at the Argosy, as it is all mechanical

You can also check the speedometer error with your GPS.

Herman, I have had a 77 Argosy with TH400 for a number of years. Last year I went through the "speedometer gear questions". I will have to dig out some old records of what I found but in the end I got everything resolved and the original speedometer works great and is very accurate when I compare to my GPS. By the way any GPS that displays speed has to be accurate in the way that they work. If you are still in the need of speedometer gear information (color and/or number of teeth) respond and I will find my old notes.

I compare with my GPS and speedometer registers a 60% faster, with time tomorrow I'll disarm the wheel with teeth and I'll see how many teeth I have. in the spec sheet says the wheels, from 34 to 42 teeth, but if I calculate my 60% more need 25 extra teeth, for example if I have 34 teeth in the transmission plus 25 I need (equivalent to 2.5% a tooth) Total 52 teeth, so there is something wrong, and before the old transmission worked well.

It shows the drive gear for a TH400 trans should be 15 tooth. If you have the 16" tires I'm guessing maybe 30"to 31" dia. and a 4.56 to 1 differential gear using the formula a 44 or 45 tooth driven gear should work.

If you have the 8x19.5 tires at 33.9" dia. the formula shows a 40 or 41 tooth driven gear.

Most Argosy's have a GM 454 engine and TH400 trans and 4.56 differential, if yours is different you will have to change the numbers.

Maybe check to make sure both your speedo and GPS are both reading in miles or kilometers. Good luck

Dan, my 74 20' Argosy has a 4:10 differential. I'm not sure at what point (and length) they made the change to a 4:56. Herman's is a 24' and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 4:10 as well.

Herman, look at the Speedometer housing cover, it has numbers written on it. As far as i know thats the only range you can use (like 38 39 40 41)
Your drive gear may not handle any other size gear.
When I swapped out my TH475, the company wanted to know the gear number and the transmission code number.

I recently changed my tire size, replacing my old tires with 225/70 R19.5s. The smaller tire diameter resulted in a 6 mph error in my speedo reading. I replaced my original 42 tooth driven gear with a 45 tooth gear and now my speedo reads within 1 mph of my GPS reading. There are two size housings, mine accepted the 45 tooth gear even though it was marked for up to 43. The drive gear can also be changed but that requires the removal of the transmission tail shaft. The driven gear was an easy change, I drove the rear tires into 6" blocks to elevate the rear and was able to take the gear housing out with very little fluid loss.

That's interesting, I had not seen that style of speedometer speed reducers before.
