Argosy throttle cable

Hi, the throttle cable (accelerator) on my 20' 1974 Argosy has fallen apart beyond repair, does anyone know where I might find a replacement or someone that could make one up for me? Tried here in the UK but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated, Phil

No need to get one made they are still easily available in the US, from Napa, Rock Auto or specialists like Mill Supply (https://www.millsupply.com/search.ph...cs=1&submit=Go).

If you are having issues getting one shipped over, let me know; we're from the UK and come back and forth every few months so can always carry small stuff back and then drop it in the post to you from that side of the Atlantic.

dodgyphil,

There are many parts that are slightly different on the Motorhome P30 chassis compared to the standard box truck P30 chassis. I have the motorhome version of the P30 chassis parts book from GM. When I get home from work this evening I'll look through the parts book to see if the throttle cable is listed and if so what the part number might be.

Off hand I can't think of any reason the throttle cables would be different but I'd hate to see you have something shipped from the US only to find out it's the wrong one.

Ok here's what I came up with straight out of the parts manual:

338903 = P308-P314 Motorhome except 10,000 or 11,000 lb Rear Axle

338904 = P314-P318 Motorhome with 10,000 lb Rear Axle

From notes in the parts manual I think the 338904 supercedes 338903 but I'm not 100% certain of that.

I think the best bet is to find a throttle cable with part number 338904. Unfortunately as near as I can tell from Google searches both 338903 and 338904 are discontinued, at least from GM. Hopefully one of larger parts house chains will have something that is suitable.

Not the best news but I hope this helps

Brad

Anyway to confirm the length and fittings?

NAPA list a 68" cable for the all the 350 and 454 engined P30 (BK 6101430) made by Balkamp

Mill Supply list a 69" cable with the same fittings (1248092)

But many other parts suppliers (Rock Auto, Summit etc list the ATP Y265 70" cable (ATP Automotive) for the all P30 from 1975-1992

I can very easily measure my 74 20'Argosy tomorrow after work. My motor is not installed yet so I have easy access for pictures and cable length.

More tomorrow....

......it's tomorrow

I measured the throttle cable on my 74 Argosy 20' mh and it's 82" plus/minus about an 1". I couldn't see the pedal end as it's covered up so no picture there. The carburetor end looks like this.

Sorry for the quality of the picture. The bracket mounts to the intake manifold at the back of the carburetor.

Looks like the cables listed above are going to be to short.

Hope this helps.

I probably should mention it's entirely possible a shorter cable could be made to work but I would think the bends might be a bit tight.

Just a thought....

ATP do make a 82in cable for GM applications that looks to have the same fittings.

ATP Y262

Meant to be replacement for the following GM parts

GENERAL MOTORS: 364659
GENERAL MOTORS: 376193
GENERAL MOTORS: 1248088
GENERAL MOTORS: 15552817
GENERAL MOTORS: 15552818

Martin,

The carburetor end of this cable isn't the same as the one on my 74. The one on my Argosy pops onto a stud with a spring loaded catch. The one in your reference link shown in the attached photo uses some sort of stud with a retainer to keep the cable on.

However I have no doubt that the one you referenced could be made to work without much effort at all. As a matter of fact I think the carburetor I'm going to be using on my 454 (Edlebrock 1406) uses the type of cable end in your reference link.

Forgot to mention Amazon has this cable for about $22, not bad.
