Argosy slider windows

Eventually.... my 20' Argosy has made it up to Massachusetts. I am still wrestling with the RMV over the title (they have classed it as an auto-home, i.e. having no engine and not able to carry passengers) but one of the first jobs is to fit some additional sliding windows in the living area.



It is a rear pull-out model, so only has two small windows on the driver side, and a slider on the passenger side. I want to fit two of the larger sliders from the mid-section of a 28'/bigger motorhome (one for each side of the panorama windows).

I haven't been able to find any online, does anyone know if any of the specialist suppliers have them, or know if anyone is dismantling a motorhome that I could get the from?

Contact bkahler here on the forum and see if he has anything left over from his tear-down of Airstream 345 motorhome. Seems like there is a RV junk yard in Missouri, can't remember the name at the moment.

If the junk yard is ColawRV, I have tried to contact them by email/online contact form but they haven't got back to me as yet - if I haven't heard anything by the end of the week I will give them a ring.

And I apologize to everyone on the forum upfront from what are going to be some strange questions during the rebuild! Martin

Hehehehehe....apologize for strange questions? just read some of the questions Ive asked on here. Seriously though, dont hesitate to ask ANYTHING here on the forum, the folks are incredibly patient and helpful.
As far as adding large windows is concerned, you will need to be very careful with any large holes cut into the outer skin. When you look at the exterior of your coach and see the vertical rivet lines, those are the locations of the "ribs" that are essentially the framing of the exterior walls and roof. Kind of like the studs in your house framing. I would be very concerned about compromising the strength of the skin by cutting through and removing portions of the ribs to add windows. One may be able to "header" off an opening like that, top and bottom of opening, but man that would be a lot of work. Removal of the interior skin and such. Im sure it could be done but........not as simple as one might think. Now if you found windows to fit in between two ribs, that would be more feasible. Now thats just my understanding on how these things are constructed. Someone correct me if ive got this wrong.

Thanks for the advice Mayco. I'm actually a little further long the process and already have the interior stripped out, back to to the outer skin and ribs so can understand what you say. There is another consideration which is also why I am looking for the larger windows. The smaller (original) slider on the passenger side of the Argosy is a little higher than the base of the wrap around, and the smaller window is higher still and approx 4' further forward. It seems (and I admit this is just from scaling photos found online) that the larger windows would....come down lower (to line-up with the wrap around), be in the same place on both driver and passenger side, yet still cover the opening left from both the original slider and original fixed. I have tried to illustrate as shown below.



I then plan to re-use the original fixed window where the new shower/toilet wet room is going next to the entrance door, and 'move' the ribs or have new channeling as needed. I can go with the larger windows as I am doing away with the cabinetry that originally influence where Airstream located them.

Does this make sense?

The Airstream shop where the work is being done has said they could source modern opening windows from an International that would do the same, but I like the look of the original sliders.

Sounds like youre all over it. I wasnt sure where you were at in the process. If youve already got the interior skins off, im sure you can fabricate the necessary framing to accommodate. So now just gotta find the windows!

The only new windows available for the Airstream and Argosy motor homes, is the single rear window, the three rear windows, the windshields and the driver and passenger slider windows.

Other than those, used is the only option.

I have PM'ed bkahler, if that isn't successful then I guess I'm looking for someone else dismantling.

Is there any chance someone could accurately measure their windows, so I know what size to ask for? I can only get an approximate size from scaling photos, and there was a guy doing a garage sale of Airstream parts in Rushsylvania, OH a few weeks back, who had several windows, but without exact sizes we couldn't work out if any would be suitable.

I'd like to swap the MH windows out for the trailer windows. The trailer windows are so simple. (like the one in the bathroom) Anyone know a source?

Please be advised that the trailer windows are different dimensions than the motorhome windows.

Therefore some sheet metal work would be necessary.

Also, complete windows, sash and glass and frame are rather expensive. Ball park, $ 500.00 each.

Perhaps you could find a totaled trailer some where and salvage the windows from it.

The only windows still available for the classic motor home are the rear opening window, the rear wrap windows if so equipped, the driver and passenger slider windows, the fixed entrance door window and the 2 windshields.

We have just been to take a look at a 1979 28' Argosy that is for sale on Craigslist, and is a prospective donor for the windows and other parts for our restoration.

We get there and it has been parked up for a couple of years with several of the sliders left open, which obviously means the rain has mean coming in, the interior and floors are rotten, the windows now can't be closed because the seals have not just gone rusty they have swollen and disintegrated. During the period it has sat, the awning has been ripped off by a storm and was actually still partially attached on the other side of the Argosy.

Everything we would need in terms of NLA parts looked to be there but in large ruined and abandoned. I offered the guy a fair price to get it towed away but he wanted what he paid. I pointed out that when he bought it, it was a running, driving, usable Argosy but he would come down, we walked away but I left my offer on the table for him to consider.

Just got me thinking why would anyone assume that something would retain it's value when left abandoned to the elements?

Replacing weatherstripping on front slider window. Do I need to use an adhesive ?? Have the 3M stuff and know that it's strong so wondering if I will have any "work time" to insert material into channel or must put it in right away??? Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I have no idea how it seals, all our seals have been replaced, but by the guys in the shop - by front to you mean cab side windows?

The windows are by and large the same across the Argosy/Excella/Classic ranges so maybe worth searching all those forum.

Slider Window Seal Wrinkle

Finished the front slider, passenger side, and used 3M weatherstripping adhesive for the main channel material. Next question for anyone who has done one is:

How can I work the wrinkles out of the outer seal curve? It's like this on the top as well.

Good suggestion and should make it lay down. The exacto knife thing occured to me. Any reason to think it would tear the seal when the window is slid back and forth? Thought maybe it could be worked out either by light stretching or something like that. Heat ????

All ideas welcomed.......Surely someone has dealt with this before.

I had the same issue. I left it. I assume the weep holes are for the excess...

I think the window design on the MH is lacking in many ways.
