Post 76' Argosy VIN decode

Hello everyone,

I was on last year looking to buy(fell through), now I've found another and am making the leap! I hope to find out more about the unit prior to the road trip....VIN#: cpy3763318866. Is it possible to get vehicle history reports on these units?

I'm looking forward to becoming and active member...great site. I'm a "Slant-six" collector as well and the web has been great with info and camaraderie as well.

Cheers,
Chris

Hello Chris -- Is this a trailer? That sure doesn't look like a trailer VIN. Makes me wonder if you're talking about a moho.

Examples of trailer VINs for an Argosy can be found at http://www.airforums.com/forums/atta...3&d=1189129122 -- it would be similar to the example given on the 2nd page. Argosy trailers were built at Versailles, OH, so would have a V in the place of manufacturer spot.

Scroll to the bottom of Vintage Airstream Photo Archives and open a given Argosy year & model of trailer; VIN examples are at the top of the page for each model. Trailer length is measured bumper to ball; round down extra inches to the last full foot of length.

76' Argosy VIN decode

No it is a 24' Agrosy MOHO, I don't have the title but this is what the seller has sent for a VIN. I grow more curious.

The VINs I have seen for 70's Argosy MHs are very similar to the trailers. Here is an example of what it might look like::
M24B6Vxxxx
M = Motor Home
24 = 24 Feet
B = Rear Bath
6 = 1976
V = Versailles, Ohio
xxxx = Production Number

What they sent you is the chassis serial number (also known as an incomplete vehicle). It shows a Chevrolet Parcel delivery, 1976 model year, one ton.

76' Argosy VIN

This is the VIN that appears on the title. Is this correct? Or should the title refect what is on the tag in the engine compartment as noted in stream I found here: "The Airstream VIN tag is on the passenger side post inside the engine compartment".

If this is the case do I need to have the "Airstream" VIN on the title or is it the GM chassis #(as you identified it..Terry) that appears on the title.

I need to clarify this as I'm picking this unit up in Virginia and driving it back up to Ontario. I don't want to get to the DMV in Virginia or the border in Detroit and find out the title is incorrect.

Cheers

Realpank,

I'm pretty sure the title DMV title should have the GM chassis number on it. I don't have our titles handy but that's what I remember being used as the VIN number. The Airstream VIN provides information on what features the coach has.

You might also check out the following thread. This is a discussion on Motorhome VIN numbers. You might find your answers there.

By the way welcome to the ranks of Argosy motorhome owners!

76' Argosy VIN

Thanks Terry, that is what I was hoping to hear. And thanks for the salutation...I've always wanted to own one of these and I think a 24' Argosy is a good starter. I'll picking it up/driving it back and heading out to camp at my favorite spot all in one week...fingers crossed that nothing major comes up during the safety certification...if it does I know it'll be fixed.

Cheers
