'76 Agrosy MH: Towing capability?

I have a 28' 76 Argosy MH with a 454/turbo 400. It has a hitch that looks pretty beefy. I assume it's stock?

Anyone know what the tow capability is? Tongue weight? I have a 5500 car I would like to tow/pull behind.

Normally, the Argosy's with the spring suspension have a 4,000# towing capacity. The hitch weight should not be an issue for a dinghy ("toad").

Some Argosy units and the later Airstream motorhomes with air bag suspensions typically had a 2,000# tow rating.

With a 5,500# dinghy, you will need a braking system for the dinghy.

My Argosy did not have any wiring for the trailer lights so I had the wiring run from the front of the chassis. I only have a 4-pin connection since my dinghy is a 1974 VW Beetle. I just use the magnetic light set.

The tow rating for your coach should be listed in the Owner's Manual.

I tow a 4500lb boat plus trailer behind my 24. No problems pulling it at all but you are aware that its there. Mine gets pretty sluggish on start ups but I never seem to notice that much in braking. Just make sure that your cooling system is up for the task. I've noticed that my unit runs considerably hotter but not overheating when towing. The clutches in my engine fan seem to be worn and I have a pin hole leak in my radiator. Found that on this last trip!

thanks for all the info.

When people pull cars with RVs there are no electronic brakes, correct? I understand on trailers, etc.

Maybe if I have someone weld up the hitch more just to be safe?

Just finished having the radiator re-cored. ($550) I put in a new high-flow water pump and a 180F high flow thermostat. We'll see how it does.
