'75 Argosy 20' door lock probs

THe door lock does not lock anymore. Now I have been looking at the L-300 as a replacement, however it looks as if I will have to do some cutting as the (what is its name??!!) metal bit which comes out to lock, is not ctr of the lock but a bit lower on the L-300. Is there a better replacement?

thx

Wiebe

75 20 foot trailer or motorhome?

They use different locks.

You have to carve on the door a little, but you must also use the motorhome striker pocket, so that the striker bolt proper engages.

When you say it doesn't lock any more. Do you mean it doesn't "latch" or doesn't "lock". If it is like my '74 Argosy, it is a very simple lock. I disassemble mine to solve a problem where the outer handle wouldn't open the latch, but the inside handle worked. I was able to make the necessary repairs in just a few minutes. What can you lose if you take it apart, it doesn't work now. Right?

I had a problem with my lock not locking too. I just replaced the lock a couple of weeks ago. But for months before that, I came up with a temporary solution for allowing my lock to stay locked.

Mine had a little pin under the handle that slides up and down - up to lock. It wouldn't stay up - gravity kept pulling it down. So I tied a little elastic string around it and the handle to keep it up but allow it to go down when using the key to unlock it. It worked ok, but I had to put the key in the door anytime I wanted to open or shut the door - because the elastic string kept it locked at all times except when using the key.

I replaced the lock with a different style, and I had to do quite a bit of cutting to get it in. I used a jig saw to make the hole for the lock bigger, and a dremel tool with a cutting wheel in a few areas requiring more delicacy.

It is a hartmann lock, are there still cilindres for the lock? The latch from the inside does engage and it locks, the keyhole though was covered with alu tape and I did not get a key....

thx

It sounds like you are not able to lock the door with a key since you don't have one. A key that is. It isn't that the door won't stay closed or latched. The lock assembly on my Argosy has a total of 7 screws that hold it in the door. I had to remove the inside handle (1 screw), the inside door locking lever (1 screw), 4 screws on the inside of the door that hold the lock mechanism in place and 1 screw on the edge of the door near the bolt.
If you can remove the entire assembly you can take it to your local locksmith, he may be able to replace the cylinder with a new one that has a key set.
Good Luck
