OK need help in determining what brand/type of toilet to replace with the old one. The replacement part for the lower half is $130.00. We have decided to just put in a new toilet and it will be one thing we don't have to worry about. Is there one toilet better than another? The old one is very heavy porcelain.
Ours is a '72, probably similar to yours.
I replaced our toilet this spring. We went with a china "Sealand" brand, low profile since it sits up on top of the black tank. The china just seems like a better quality and easier cleaning.
The brand and type you use is up to you as long as the dimensions are correct.

Our “old” Thetford’s (china bowl) 1st birthday was in June this year.
And why was I replacing a one year old toilet?
While doing routine black tank cleaning and rinsing; which involves filling the tank with the garden hose and then flushing. I was using a rather large metal flashlight to peer down into the toilet to see when the tank was completely filled.
Not too complicated, only takes a little time.
I just did not think about the flashlight resting on top of the lavatory just daring someone to give it a little bump, which I did. The hard end of the flashlight hit the china bowl just above the valve opening and added a now very unnecessary 2nd hole. One second I’m being a conscientious tank cleaner... the next busting a perfectly good toilet by being clumsy & not thinking about what would happen if that flashlight toppled over.
My choice for replacement was another Thetford product:
Aqua Magic Style Plus (product no. is 34430 at Camping World).
Suggestions: Get the china bowl. It will make cleaning much easier and resists staining much better than the more economical plastic.
Make sure your new toilet will cover the same area as your existing toilet. Ours uses the riser accessory which also serves as a large escutcheon plate since our finish flooring does not go all the way to the mounting flange.
You may also need to check the clearances between rear & side walls as they relate to the center of the drain pipe and the newer toilet.
I picked this particular model because of the
1. China bowl,
2. Removable shroud that wraps the pedestal and looks like it would make any adjustments or repairs easier
3. I like the action of the Thetford valve as it retracts to the side and is “ball” shaped.
4. Member price at Camping World seemed to be more than fair and it was sitting on the shelf and I needed something to sit ON.

I used the Sealand Traveller Low Profile in my '73 Sovereign center bath as it sits atop the black tank (above floor). I used the standard height Sealand Traveller in the '72 Overlander rear bath. It has a plastic housing/shroud which wraps the base of the bowl which can be removed for servicing.
They're very nice and feel very residential. (In the rear bath Overlander, I did have to turn the base just a bit, if I remember correctly.)
P.S. - I haven't stress tested it with a flashlight yet!

Mine did. IIRC I had to buy a universal adapter/seal from my local RV shop. No big deal.

When you are looking - be sure to double check the front to back measurements. this is usually where the space squeeze comes in. The Sealand Traveler lite is smaller than the regular Traveler model
