Been there, done that. It was so sad. We had it done by the closest dealer to us, in Gilman, IL, and while we were at it, we had a full safety check done because the old girl is 39 years old now.
I need to replace the AC unit on my 69 Sovereign. This might be a good time to do it before the spring rush. I'm open to any suggestions.

I have had new air conditioners installed on both of my coaches. On the Airstream, it was a replacement for the original Armstrong while on the Minuet it was an entirely new installation. Something to keep in mind is that if your coach has its original Armstrong Bay Breeze air conditioner is that it won't be fitted over the now standard 14" square opening - - rather there will be two or three small round openings through which wiring and mechanicals pass so it will be necessary to make the three openings into a square opening for a new unit. If you wish to keep the condesate drain, it will be necessary to check with an Airstream dealer or service center to determine which manufacturers and models of air conditioners are being supported with drain pans for the condesate drains. This was one of those projects that my favorite Vintage Friendly Airstream dealer handled on both of my coaches - - I wasn't particularly concerned with maintaining the condesate drains so went with Coleman (Mach series on Overlander and Mini-Mach on Minuet) - - no problems with the condesate on the Overlander, but it produces rust streaks on the Minuet.
Good luck with your air conditioner project!

OUCH! The dealer in Gilman, at least in 2003, we found to be not all that good. There is another forum member that caught them in some ball face lies. When I went to buy the Safari, I got a really nasty email from them cause I was shopping. I got the sense it wasn't a very professional outfit and the location made me think there was a strip joint down the street!
Not sure on the vintage tip, but I love our 15k BTU Penguin. If your coach is 25' it works very well.

There used to be several threads on replacement air conditioners.. Penguins can be installed with Airstream-compatible drip pans that are intended to have a fitting to connect to the Airstream drain line that usually runs down street side between inner and outer skin.
Andy R at Inland RV has been successful installing Carrier units with "slinger" style blower to avoid condensate drain problems without fitted drain pan, though there's some of his own engineering involved and not every dealer could perhaps handle it...
