Axels are most likely shot. They don't have to be replaced right away. They have rubber springs in them that go bad after a few decades. If the axle is higher than the attachment point for the arm then they need replacing. If they are stiff and don't move when you jack up the trailer they are bad. They don't have to be replaced right away and the world won't come to an end. Wait till you figure out what you are going to do with the trailer before investing $1500 or more on axles till you are sure you are going to keep it and that you will finish the remodel. You can even use the trailer with dead axles but it is a good idea to replace them. The bearings need to be repacked and the brakes need to be in working condition before the axle springs are a concern. Long term use of bad axles can cause structural damage. If you plan to use it a lot and tow long distances good axles are important. For occasional weekend hops it really does not matter. I am not selling axles so I have no stake in this.

Other than that, it is the same as mine. The knob to turn it out is spring loaded, and pops out once you press it. Perhaps this looks different due to the circular patch I used?

That thing is NICE!!!!

Soooooo,
Looking for Astrodome hardware, since mine is mangled. Looks identical to the lifting mechanism on the standard, original 14" vents. If you have any of the parts, please give me a shout.

Toodles

Make you a square one out of aluminum. Put EDPM foam rubber on the inside and it will seal against the existing lip for the jelly bean shaped frame. You could make a plastic insert for it if you want to let some light in and have another opportunity for it to age, crack, and leak.

My standard vents have a metal lid with a plastic inserts that were cracked. The insert was remove and now there is a solid metal plate there. I am so glad the whole thing was not plastic.

Thanks

Thanks Perry,

I, too, thought about making one out of AL. It would never break, and frankly, I don't care for having yet another leak point for light. But I was under pressure to do something so we could use it, and sprang the big bucks $$$$$ for the VTS reproduction. It is nice looking, but probably 3 times as translucent as the original. Good during the day for extra light. But the whole trailer is light up like a Christmas tree by 6 AM.

It isn't the very end, but an end to this chapter. My family broke it to me last summer that they were done camping unless the kids could bring friends. Seeing as how Dumpster can't accommodate that, I really have no choice. So it is back to a white, square, nondescript refrigerator box for the time being. I guess I would rather do that, as painful as it is, than quit camping altogether.

The next chapter will be after the kids head off to college. Round 2 with something older. I always had a soft spot for a '62.

Peace

Dumpster,

Can't you just put the kids and friends in a tent. Maybe they are already spoiled by the gentler side of camping. Beds, warmth, toilets, running water.

That was part of our issue... with 4 adult size people in our trailer, it was a little tight, but we managed. With not a lot of time to work on it either, it made it a more daunting task...in the end we made the choice to part with her. but there is another....

Yep- thats a carefree. I pulled mine and replaced with a zip dee.

And i agree with all these posts. 2500 is going rate to buy your palate. Plan on 15k-20k. But you'll have it the way you want it, and should be worth more than you have in it if you do it right.

We'll catch you on the posts on how you should build your gantry's.

You left out being dragged out of your tent and eaten alive by a bear. Yep, spoiled rotten.

Am I missing the obvious solution here? "Hey kids! We're going camping this weekend! Bring your friends!"

Then, make sure you mention to their friends' parents that "the kiddies will be outside in a tent..." And, they will self-select.

It's like Trump when he says the illegals will deport themselves...

And you'll be back to happy family camping... without their friends!
