My wife and I purchased our 1970 Overlander about a year ago. With the help of a friend we found a nice fixer upper. We planned out what we could get done over each weekend and worked on our project whenever we had the time. Between deployments, work and home upkeep we finally managed to get our Overlander ready for the road.
Our plan was to keep most of our Airstream original. We did upgrade items that were worn or broken beyond repair. The entire project was a team effort from start to finish. We read Airstream forums on a regular basis for ideas and also watched the DIY network Clasic Rides which fortunately covered the same model year and as our Overlander.
We had some great help from one of the RV Tech's at Gulf Coast RV Service in FT Walton Beach, FL. He had little experiance working on Airstream before he started (a lot by the time he was done) but did a great job and charged a fair rate for his service.
Over the course of the last year we did the following to our Overlander: New tires, brakes and back plates, a new furnace, re-upholstered the couch, kitchen counter, kitchen faucet, refinished bathroom, electric waste gate, electric jack, new propane lines, rewired the electrical system, painted the interior, new interior lighting, heavy cleaning and lots of little details.
The whole project was a lot of fun for both of us. Thanks for all the great posts that helped us figure things out along the way.
