Load leveling hitch

Has anyone used a load leveling hitch on a range rover with air suspension? I've heard it shouldn't be done, but it is really limiting what I can tow as the max tongue weight is only like 550#.

Thx
A

The Range Rover is not really designed to be a travel trailer tow vehicle. My neighbor who owns one came to this conclusion after much banging on the steering wheel and cursing the drivers in the string of cars behind him.

Everyone I've known with a Range Rover thinks they're British revenge for the American Revolution.

Load leveling hitch

Greetings Austin!

I can't speak to the Range Rover, but I have towed my Airstreams with both a Cadillac and Oldsmobile that have air level suspension. Most manufacturers have some type of procedure to follow when setting up a weight distributing hitch with an air-ride equipped vehicle. The basic procedure with my GM products has been to:
  • Attach hitch head to receiver then back tow vehicle into position to drop coupler onto ball.
  • Turn off ignition switch and drop coupler onto ball and lock.
  • Insert and adjust weight distribution bars.
  • DO NOT RESTART TOW VEHICLE UNTIL ALL HITCH ADJUSTMENTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
I have had good luck with this procedure since the mide-1990s. The idea is to connect the weight distribution function while the auto-level is inactive. Typically, I notice very little movent due to the auto-level once the tow vehicle is restarted.

Good luck with your investigation.

Kevin

Air suspension should "NEVER" be used with a load equalizing hitch.

The insurance division of Airstream, Caravanner Insurance, proved many years ago, that to do so "DEFEATS" the real purpose of the hitch, and encourages "loss of control".

However, if so equipped, disable the system, lower the pressure to minimum, and then hook up the trailer.

That method does not harm the load equalizing hitch purpose or effectiveness.

Proof of the pudding. Go to a scale, and measure all the tire weights, with and without the air system functioning.
