LG TV with JVC mobile DVD receiver

Having been a home integrator most my life I am stunned by the fact the the 22" LG TV (720p), which rightly has an HDMI input, is apparently connected to the JVC mobile DVD receiver that has only a composite video (480i) output.

Airstream must of used a simple converter cable right? Is it buried in the wall or behind the JVC where we can remove it and upgrade the DVD receiver? We basically have a $100 TV mated with a $100 media player BFD!

I would like to base a small Mac Mini w/an air mouse up in that cabinet too, probably add a 4k TV/Monitor in the sleeping section and upgrade the LG to a TV that would synch up correctly on a simple parallel HDMI splitter.

I think I read somewhere here in the forum that someone else was mystified where the other end of the HDMI cable is/went.

Thanks for all the input. Getting rid of the junk TV, DIN DVD/receiver and analog thermostat. Going with (2) 27" 4K LG monitors both with Chief Kontour mounts - one wall and one pole (for the bedroom). Ironically the old power supply was plug and play! They will both have to stow away in portrait position for space in the kitchen & the view in the bedroom. Going with a very compact and slim Pioneer net receiver (110v) and an Atmos 3.1.2 speaker array (bdrm). Also that digital heat only Honeywell thermostat was a no brainer 10 minute install. Oh I forgot the Apple TV 4K little black box and flat pack HDMI 4x2 matrix switcher.

I need to answer my own question here and it’s good news. The cable from the back of the tv is HDMI all the way. Behind the JVC unit it plugs into a USB powered active converter that accepts the SD composite video and analog audio from the JVC outputs.(the audio will travel both directions apparently which is cool when ithe TV is receiving local broadcasts)

Remove that active converter (I did) and you have a HDMI cable to use for whatever, which BTW carries digital audio signals if you had a head end unit that could handle them (jeez!).

Interested?

This is a super neat "mod."I have a few questions. Where did the wires run to the TV that is set up for bedroom viewing?? Where did you put that mount? On the pictures on your initial response, showing MSNBC, where is that image coming from. I really want to be able to hear the local broadcast over the provided speakers as the TV volume is not nearly sufficient to overcome the noise when the Air Conditioner unit is in use. Also could you provide pictures of what your new "cabinet" looks like with the JVC unit out and your new unit in??

Thanks

It's still a work in progress. We are headed back up to camp shortly while equipment ordered is arriving up there. Starting to feel like overkill but we were so used to having a TV in our sleeping quarters with our last trailer.

I am excited to try out the ordered Milwaukee M12 inspection camera so I can explore all the nooks and crannies of this trailer to further plan wiring paths & methods. Trying to avoid tearing the place apart.

With the parts I had at the time I was able to try out the arms and the new monitors which allowed me to plan the rest of the project and order more parts, so please stay tuned for photos and description.

Had an old stock set of BA Soundware XS 5.1. speakers. The powered sub nestled nicely in the most unused storage section below the dinette. Only required removing the trim plate surround.

The flat pack 2 in x 4 out hdmi matrix switch with IR control and digital audio out (following one output) is perfect for this application (very compact). The B output will mostly follow the A except when on the ip camera system at the camp.

JVC KD-AV41BT for sale

Anyone wanting to upgrade their 22fb to the latest Bluetooth DVD receiver that my one month old 2018 had in it? It has about 2 weeks of use. NAPERVILLE AIRSTREAM shorted me the little IR remote, but I will include the powered HDMI two way audio adapter that AS installed with it first $80 free ship stateside takes it. PayPal only, returns accepted.

I went with a smaller cheaper Pioneer mechless BT unit since I am adding a small computer to browse and watch movies on the new monitors with.

Includes a new BT mic as I am leaving the present one in place.

Red face

Quite a bit of work to do yet but the Kontour series mounts give us all the viewing options. We both had our own screens over a late breakfast today, and it can be placed almost “in your face” for evenings in the fb. With 4K displays and good source material you can get away with that.

Lastly, in the higher positions you can maintain the window vantage point.

What model receiver did you go with? Does is support hdmi audio arc for watching live TV or did you use audio out from the tv to the receiver?

We only have one digital station on the Keweenaw and it is a real yawner. I am adopting to the theory that my primary source will be the Apple TV 4K unit via my broadband connection. Not sure if this setup is relevant to most Airstreamers as my traveling RV’ing days are probably behind me for the most part.

The VSX-S520 compact net receiver. What is so cool is it has complete 2 way status feedback and control via the iControl AV5 iPad or Android app.

https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...ivers/VSX-S520

It will reside at the very top of the wardrobe closet and have a hardwired Ethernet connection. The analog audio from the monitor in the galley will feed the Pioneer MVH-3300BT mobile unit and power the AS speakers, but the HDMI digital audio from the matrix switcher will be amplified to the fb (front bdrm) surround speakers.

Should be completed in a couple of weeks and will elaborate.

I am probably going to start with a simple mod. I have replaced the stock TV with a 24 Samsung smart tv. It has an audio out (headphone jack). I would like to run that over to the receivers aux input. Have you fished any wires from the TV to the receiver? Was it difficult?

So far I have drilled two 1” holes in the wall behind the 27” LG 4K computer monitor (there are no small 4K smart TVs available). One is open for cabling into the closet from the monitor, the other for a 1” schedule 40 aluminum pipe spanning to the side of the upper cabinets. This pipe is not unsightly, but it is totally hidden from view by the monitor anyway. I am going to use a countertop style grommet to finish off the raw open hole. The circular flanges are Kee Lite aluminum fittings, sort of staying in the AS realm of things. These are VERY STURDY and you could probably use them as grab bars. On the other end of the upper cabinets I had to upsize to 1 1/4” schedule 40 aluminum pipe and fittings to fit the minimum size required for the Chief Kontour pole mount.

I spanned another 1” crossbar at the bottom of the pole mount to get from the lower cabinet into the bed assembly which gets me to the other side for the sub, rear speakers, and an ethernet jack under the table.

I first worked with Kee Lite fittings and schedule 40 pipe when my wife and I built our steps down to the lake. It is super easy to cut, drill into, and even tap for threaded LED down lights.

I have quite a bit to do yet! I realize there are other ways to get wires in and around the trailer but trust me this is the easiest. I can only spend so much time on my knees or in the various contortions required in these close quarters!

I'm about to do the same. I'm hoping I can tie or tape a pull string to an existing wire running from the tv to the receiver, pull it through, then pull back any other needed cables (along with the one I pulled out and an extra pull string for future use) behind the wall. And go from there.. hopefully the existing cables aren't zip tied together . Anyone else have any experience fishing wires between tv and receiver ?

I don't think so, too many obstructions, frame members and insulation. That works in theory in a lot of situations but not in this one. I ran that little 1" aluminum pipe from the upper cabinet (which is hidden from view) to the wardrobe. I can run a multitude of cables it that, and actually cut off that bulky HDMI cable that was in the walls as it takes up way too much space behind the receiver, both in its unused extra length, and it's mass compared to the compact "thin line" HDMI cables such as available at monoprice.com.

I might have missed it somewhere but how did you get 110v power behind the JVC stereo shelf (above the sink)?

I am trying to remember.......I think I have all the DC supplies plugged into an multi-outlet strip up there. There is the bed area LG TV, an ethernet switch, the HDMI 4X2 matrix, and the Apple TV 4K (the only direct 110v) box up there. Pretty sure I ran an extension cord through the aluminum pipe behind the galley TV into the left side of the upper cabinet, then they are bundled to not interfere with all the condiments, etc. Once you get those pipes in it's pretty easy (until they're full).

It has worked great for two years now, but since we are at our own camp, and have an ISP, it really isn't set up for the roamer. I have made a couple trips to Jackson Center for main door adjustment (yes they were too lazy the first time to do it right. What the hell it's only a 1500 mile round trip), and have found that you cannot rely on commercial campground wifi or a cell plan hot spot to properly drive an Apple TV 4k unit. I do have an off air HDTV tuner but have not put it into use since we get no signal where we are (boonies).

Just a footnote that it is so wonderful to have a door that closes correctly. It was such a drag for so long, but now we can finally enjoy our Airstream. And the Kee Lite Aluminum pipe..... anyone that sees it just assumes its OEM it matches the interior perfectly. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again in an Airstream.
