Canadian Specification Models

Our salesman told us that our 2015 Bambi Sport 16J was built to Canadian specifications, even though we bought it in Ohio. He said some Canadian dealers had cancelled orders due to the unfavorable exchange rate and special pricing was available to U.S. dealers on the units. He said that Canadian models can be identified because of an extra row of side clearance marker lights, which ours has. He also said that it has a heavier wiring harness. Anyone have additional details on the differences between U.S. and Canadian models?

Stone Guards

One of the major differences is the Stainless Steel stone guards. Because of the extra clearance lights on the Canadian model, the stone guards are about 6 inches shorter than the American model.

My Safari Sport was built to the Canadian specifications. Biggest difference is larger size tires and beefier running gear.

There are no "extra" clearance lights on the Canadian models. Lights that are normally on the roof of US trailers are moved to the sides so there are 2 - one in advance of the other - on the front and back of both sides of the trailers.

At least on our trailer that does not seem to be the case. It has the same roof clearance lights as American Bambi's plus an extra set on the side. Here is a photo of our unit.

I've always wondered if there was any difference as well - haven't ever seen anything more visible than the extra set of running lights on the side of our trailer.

But I can tell you that the extra running lights means you light up like a Christmas Tree after dark. We've never done much nighttime driving but there was once we got off the ferry from Port Aux Basque, Newfoundland to Sydney, Nova Scotia after dark. If I recall correctly it was close to midnight and raining - everyone was looking for a place to spend the night and pretty much all of the RV's on that ferry had the same campground in mind - and they all followed us ...... when we arrived must have been at least a dozen other's right on our tail - and they were all thankful to us for being the "beacon of light" that led the way ...... felt like the Pied Piper .....

You will also have different 120 volt circuit breaker sizes , I believe there 15 amps for the canadian version versus 20 amps for the usa version, and the canadian version you can't get a optional microwave oven. And of course the extra clearance side markers ( double) on the bottom.

I will have to check the breakers next time at our storage facility, but ours came with factory microwave.

Okay.....there are some differences between the Canadian and American ASs. Clearance lights, breakers, etc.

What then would this mean to someone in Canada purchasing a previously owned AS in the US and trying to bring it back to Canada?

It depends on the model of trailer ,the 16 foot sport newer models , breakers ,(I suspect wiring gauge ),clearance lights, and no microwave available in canada as option, due too csa standards. It's very easy to put a factory microwave in ( two brackets and plug it in ) that's for usa ,can't get it if the trailer manufacture destination is canada., as for a 19 foot flying cloud the rear axle has a heavier rating 200 lbs more for canada , different circuit breakers 15 amp for canada ,20 for usa, I would assume the wiring gauge is different, extra side marker lights , as for other model airstreams ?

As for importing a new airstream to canada it's a piece of cake , not sure about used , I brought two new ones to canada ,pay gst taxes, make sure there's no manufacture recalls , you get the trailer inspected at canadian tire , they check the lights, tires and axle rating and that's it, pay the taxes on the trailer and get your plates.

Importing trailers is simple. We imported our 2011 which we purchased in California in 2014, no modifications necessary, you just have to have proof there are no unresolved recalls, pay taxes, etc.

BTW, Traveland RV is the Airstream dealer near Vancouver. I don't recall anything different about the 2014 27FB International they had we were looking to buy.
