Folks!..... We have a winner! That is a spot you would only know if you've been there - obviously you have R2. My hint was going to be:
"You have to be old to see things from this point of view."
But, I thought some one would get too easily. Excellent guess indeed!

Inyo National Forest - Special Places

One more addition to the list. A long way from Kansas City. Thanks for posting!

I was pretty close, then. Congrats to R2 for nailing it. That looks like a real knuckle-biter of a drive, especially towing. Is it as rewarding as it looks like it should be? Is there a campground at the end?

It's a long curvy climb w/a gain/loss of more than 7,000ft, worse on the way down due to gearing down and breaking.

There is a campground at about 8,500ft called Grandview ( though there is no real view from the actual campground). There are 16 sites, most not level and none are suited for large trailers. In fact it's really better suited for tent campers which is what I did the last time I was up there.

The campground is first come, first served, has no running water and you must take your trash with you, making it a gamble to drive a trailer up there. It's better suited for day trips which is what most people do. We were lucky and found a spot, though it did not have a fire ring and was tough to get in and out of. All things considered I doubt I would take my Bambi up there again.... It would really suck to have to turn around and drive back down because of availability or site restrictions. But, I can say I did it.

Not yet. The hole has resulted in a huge increase in numbers of visitors. So they're trying to decided if/whether/how to preserve it as an attraction. The damaged cars will be on display through about August when the repairable ones will be shipped off to GM, I believe.

Yes, I've been there! If you haven't seen them, it's well worth a trip up to check out the ancient bristlecone pines. We camped at Grandview and hiked White Mountain, all 14252 feet! The only bummer was the hazy sky from a fire in the Sierras.

Where is it?

I thought that was Hwy 168 out of Big Pine. We just came back from Lee Vining; we stayed at the Mono Vista RV park at the north end of town.

Great little place, if you stay try and get one of the back in spaces at the north edge of the park; no one behind you and you have views of Mono Lake.

Just finished a two week trip to the Badlands, 3442 miles total, some of the most magnificent scenery we've ever experienced. Trying to decide how best to post the pics here, perhaps start off in the ever-popular eye-candy thread.

Taken while heading to Lake Davis this past weekend. we took a bit of a long route. Our original destination was Union Valley Reservoir. I called the NFS beforehand and asked if it's pretty quiet during the week. The lady I spoke to replied, "oh yeah should be real quiet". But.....not the case. Was about 75% full and almost every campsite seemed to have 6 kids bikes and just as many float tubes. So, not really what we were looking for. Lake Davis as always was great though (more pictures in my other thread HERE):
