22 FB lug nuts
1 week old 22FB ang getting ready for first trip. I wanted to torque the lug nuts, but read that they probably have lug nut covers on them. Never ran into those before. Ordered a lug nut cover puller wrench, but it won’t fit in the tight spot. So now I’m questioning whether these are plain lug nuts, or nuts with covers. Can anyone shed light on this? I believe they say Mcgard on them.

If they say McGard on them then they are probably solid lug nuts. McGard doesn’t make lug nuts with covers as far as I know.

My '17 22FB had solid lug nuts, no caps on them. 110 ft lb torque and 65 psi is what I ran with zero issues.

To clarify, the covers are part of the nut. The cover is a chrome plated sheetmetal covering that is form fitted and fused to the center steel nut. It is not removable, but may fail. If they fracture, you may need a smaller socket to remove the nut. Pat

There are a couple of recent threads where people talk about the sheet metal caps on the lug nuts. They have pictures of them splitting. Search lug nuts, or look for a posting from me in a lug nut thread.

Those in the picture are solid lug nuts. They don't have the non-removable shell on them that has been discussed previously. Use your 13/16" socket, and torque them to 110 foot pounds.

I thought Airstream stopped using the lug nut covers in about 2015.

My stream did have the covers and of course they cracked. I replaced them all with McGard lug nuts. Problem solved.

I believe Airstream started using solid lug nuts sometime during the 2017 model year. If yours has the two-part lug nut, be sure to (1) use only a six-point socket, (2) be certain the socket is pushed as far in as it will go before applying torque to it and (3) replace them all with solid nuts as soon as practicable.
You can easily tell if your lug nuts are solid or two part, by removing one and looking at the base of the lug nut. You'll easily see the hydroformed stainless steel shell if it's two parts.

Our 2017 International Serenity 27FB was built in Aug.'16. It had the chrome cover capped lug nuts, which I replaced with solid stainless steel lug nuts purchased at a NAPA store. (Lots of options for solid stainless steel lug nuts are available on the market.) I took the easy route and had the NAPA guy look at ours; he verified the diameter and thread pitch of the factory nuts, which we replaced.
Don't forget to re-torque the new nuts upon replacement after 50-100 miles, especially on aluminum wheels. Your owners manual will provide the proper torque spec.

...unless you have the newer Goodyear Endurance tires then you want 78-80psi in them. They stopped with GYM and put the GYE on all 2018 22FB Sports as I understand it.

Most of mine are cracked on our 2015 International 19. Called the local airstream dealer and they have solid lug nut replacements in stock so I’ll probably go get some this weekend.
