16rb sport Interstate battery meltdown.. opsie

Last trip out was july for the 2019 16rb sport. Went to top off the battery on the first day of the trip. Plugged in to shore power at camp. Battery was in full meltdown, burned through the cap, spewing battery acid all over the battery box, smoking and audible boiling sound.

Disconnected from shore power and flipped the master switch. Disconnected and separated the terminal connections when it cooled down.

Good times! Getting that solar upgrade when we get back to the dealer.. that's where peanut sleeps when not in use.Click image for larger version

That should not have occurred unless something from the pole to your battery is reversed! Proceed with caution and check your polarities! Could also be whatever your camper is using as a battery charge....over charging....by a lot.

Most likely, the battery is shorted between cells.

I would take the battery cables off and take a voltage reading on the battery. I would also use a hydrometer to check each cell. If there's no electrolyte in the cells then the battery has shorted out between the cells and the 13.8 vdc charge coming from the converter is boiling the acid that's left. Take the battery back to Interstate and get a replacement.

If that isn't the issue, I would attach a multimeter in AC mode 120+ scale to the battery terminals and turn the converter on, take a reading. Then I would switch to DC mode 20 vdc scale and take a reading. It should read between 13 and 15 vdc. If you're reading 120 vac, then something's wrong with the converter or wiring, but I would have expected fuses or breakers to blow.
