Dinette Bed Extension

I held off buying an airstream for quite a few years because of the extra small unusually sized beds. The 22 CCD Dinette bed is easily enlarged to a true double bed.

I built a folding shelf with screw on legs and added it to the dinette. My shelf added 10 inches to the existing 40" wide dinette now making it a true double bed at 50". I added a 10" wide by 70" long medium density foam block and a double bed mattress cushion to smooth out the lumpy dinette cushions. I made a notch in my shelf to allow the bathroom door to open wide enough to use in the night. To hold the extension in place it rests on the seats with cork to protect the seats and has baby cupboard latches underneath to keep it from sliding away.

The children are now happy and we are jealous. The permanent front bed is only 46" wide and would require serious modifications to enlarge.

Hi Mangin,

This looks like a really good solution to the long enduring problem…I like it!

A question though, “Where do you keep the extras (10x70 foam block and double bed mattress cushion) during the day/entertaining times?”

Look forward to your insight,
Chris

Nice work Mangin

I have a 22' CCD and I enlarged the front bed to a Queen size. Boy what a difference! It took some work but it was well worth it.

My wife and I spend about 60 nights a year in our trailer. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we do

I got to say, our bed extension is the best improvement to the Airstream! Our front gaucho extension turns the small bed into a true king size.

The extra cushions are stored in the back of the SUV when not needed.

The double mattress pad fits on top of the front bed during the day.

The 10" by 70" foam block is covered with a cloth bag. We put it on the front bed under the front window and the kids use is as a back rest during the day.

The shelf extension folds in half and the legs screw off then it goes in the cupboard under the front bed. The screw off legs were a great buy at Home Depot. Much easier then making some sort of folding legs.
