What's the market bearing for a 05-06 bunkhouse these days? Assuming good condition? I never see any for sale to get an idea.

I think like anything these days prices have gone up unfortunately, especially with the current model AS pricing. The big factor in looking at any used Airstream is condition especially approaching 17-18 years old.

We bought our Safari Bunkhouse new back in 06 (05 model) and would buy it again if i was to do it all over again. Been an incredible unit, on my 4th tow vehicle and many a good times...

Obviously, as with all used items, condition is important when assessing the value and in the end it's worth exactly what someone is willing to pay, right?

I was just trying to get a sense of what people thought or what kind of range might apply to an 05'-06' bunkhouse assuming a well cared for unit. Years ago, when I would see them for sale, it seemed like $25K-$30K was a good ball park on a used unit. Has that remained steady?

Seems prices have really gone up for so many factors. I would be surprised if you could find a bunkhouse under 30k that did not need many repairs? I am seeing 23-25 footers going for mid to high 30s in good shape.

Probably the biggest factor in used pricing is the cost of the new ones going over double from what they were in 05-06.

Hello Safari 30' bunkhouse owners!

Has anyone in the group replaced their old Dometic 120/LP Fridge/Freezer (RM 2862) with a new 12 v fridge like the Dometic DMC410?

Our old one has finally ended its life as the fridge part no longer cools but the freezer works great. Repairs are likely to end up being so expensive, it is likely better for us to get a new unit.

If so, which one did you install? Were any modifications required since this going from a vented to a non-vented unit? We are reading so much conflicting information but we know location and install can vary greatly by Airstream model.

We are considering installing it ourselves but we may hire someone too.
Thanks!

Yes! We did this about a year ago and love it. It has more inside space (I think the newer 2-way ones do too). It doesn't require leveling and can run anywhere without fear of open flame. The only downside is the battery use. As long as you are always getting elec. hookup, then the factory batteries will be fine. If you want to boondock with the 12V fridge, look into lithium batteries and/or solar. Initially, it had some noise when the compressor would kick on, but that has subsided over time. The only way to notice it now is if you wake up and night and you're trained on the noise.

If you have the lounge chairs, remove them from the rig beforehand or at least out of the way to the door from the fridge. The old fridge comes out pretty easily. A few screws inside the fridge door and a couple of bolts at the rear which are accessible from the outside lower vent hatch. Remove the doors from the fridge for easier removal. I taped cardboard to the floor to prevent damage. I had a stool about the same height as the cabinet and put that on the floor next to the fridge to allow sliding out without needing to bear the weight. Once out of the cabinet, turn 90 degrees, tip, carry (get a friend), stand up by the door, turn 90 degrees, tilt out the door until horizontal, and carry out.

We installed a NorCold because it was available on Amazon and with delivery (https://a.co/d/78eHNHp). Installation was the reverse of the removal. I left the doors on, though. Fitment wasn't exact to the cabinet. I used a lot of wooden door shims to get it right and then screwed it in place. I also sealed up the gap with a foam "rod" (https://a.co/d/74v7hbP). I went to a local plastics shop and got them to cut some trim in black matte plastic and glued those in place on the wall to cover the gap and rod. Although not given in the Norcold instructions, I highly recommend drilling two holes through the rear frame of the fridge and screwing it to the cabinet on the back side as well.

Perhaps the biggest pain was getting the propane line covered and sealed. I didn't want to crimp/cut in case someone wanted to install a 2 way later. So I had to solder on a fitting that would accept a plug. It took a while to get that all sealed up properly, but I'm not a professional plumber.

I also recommend that while you have the fridge out, check the free length and attachment of the furnace thermostat wire to the wall inside the fridge cabinet. Mine has a bunch of slack taped to the wall and therefore immobile (only ~1 inch protruding from the wall to the thermostat) which made a same-time-as-the-fridge thermostat upgrade a pain until I released some slack.

Pictures attached. Happy to discuss on the phone / Zoom if you like. Just PM me here on the forums and we can connect outside.

There are fridge repair kits available from: https://www.pinesrv.com/products/

It looks like they sell wholesale only, so a parts dealer will have to order.

You might also consider contacting these folks:

https://jc-refrigeration.com/

Clearly the compressor fridges have more interior room, however, be warned that if you boondock, you will most likely need to budget your power as it does consume a great deal of the overall power stored.

If you don't boondock much or at all, ignore the link.

Has anyone needed to replace the plastic in the front window (bedroom) rock guard? I've read some other threads here on the forums and it looks like the vintage or even current 3-panel, wrap-around ones are pretty easy to get apart...just drill some rivets. But for the ones on our models where it's only one piece, I can't seem to find out how to get the frame open to replace the plastic. It looks like everything was pressed together at the factory. I'm hoping I don't have to replace the whole guard and that I can just open the frame and get a new piece of plastic made. Advice / experience?

window rock guard

@WineStream
We replaced our front window rock guard about 4 years ago after the plastic cracked.

I think there are 2 primary options.
1. I think some window places could potentially replace the plastic and drilling out and re-riveting every thing.

2. You can order a new rock guard from Airstream. We actually did that 2 times but had to send them both back since they sent us 1 that where the brackets were on in the wrong place and another when they sent us a square edge one instead of curved.

We ended up building a new one with help from family with aluminum u channels and some other parts.

Thanks. Excellent info, esp. #2. I got a quote from Airstream and it's $900 and they said it would be a "custom build" and take 6-8 weeks. Based on your experience, I think I'll skip that one. I didn't see a way to drill out rivets and have the plastic come out...everything looked metal-worked / crimped in place. I guess I'll get more creative with my repair.

Going to pay it forward here, maybe...

Way back in post #684 of this thread and in 2014, I posted here asking if anyone was looking to sell their 2005 bunk. Amazingly, someone PM'd me some hours later and said that they had one that they hadn't advertised yet but wanted to sell and wanted it to go to a family.

Now 9 years later, my family has enjoyed our bunkhouse thoroughly. The kids are grown, and aren't so interested in camping with mom and dad, and the littlest one is now at the weight limit of the upper bunk. So we bought a new Airstream tonight (without bunks).

So I'm informally advertising the bunkhouse here first. If there's someone lurking out there or you know someone who wants a 2005 bunk, please PM me here on the forums and we'll connect. I'll be advertising the trailer in the usual spots tomorrow or this weekend. The deets are below and pics attached. Willing to be flexible with someone here on the forums regarding included accessories, pickup/delivery, and timing. The trailer is located in the East San Francisco Bay, California.

12 V fridge install

Hello! I attempted to post this a few months ago here but apparently it did not work. We successfully replaced our 120V/propane fridge with a 12 V from Dometic. Overall, it was easier than expected. The Dometic DMC4104 is a perfect fit in the space but we used some aluminum L bracket as trim on the sides to make the space look nice.
Getting the old one out was challenging but got some help lifting it over the kitchen sink area. We cleaned up the space and added Reflectix insulation on the interior of the outside facing wall to cover up the old exhaust hole on the top. We may do something different with that in the future.

We had an empty fuse space so we wired new wire from the fuse box along the same line as the previous 12 v wire that went to the old fridge. That went from under the fridge, to the back and bottom of the cabinet to the right of the fridge and then into the fridge compartment.

After carefully putting in the new fridge, we wired everything up and screwed it in to the front. We found that the 2 back "legs"/gliders were up off the floor slightly so we screwed in 2 wood shims to the floor so the legs were tight to that.

While we mostly are always on shore power, we want to upgrade to lithium batteries in the future we know we need to upgrade or retrofit the fuse panel/converter charger before we can do that.
I am attaching a few photos and let us know if anyone has any questions about the install.
