TAC caravan - Natchez Trace - October 2011

I'm organizing a trip up Natchez Trace - 444 miles of countryside in a single national park running from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN. There are three free primitive campsites on the route, for boondockers, and many full service sites with hook-ups nearby. I was thinking of doing it 24-29 October 2011, to catch the leaves in fall colors, and because the free spots are usually more available.

At this time the average high temp is 74F and the low 48F. The southern part of the Trace will be green, but the northern part of the Trace would be well into fall colors that week.

We can bounce ideas around here. The only rule is to have fun.

My outline would be to start on a Monday (to allow people time to prepare and travel to Natchez, MS)

Sunday 23rd: Start meeting up in Natchez MS at a full service site
Monday 24th: afternoon departure Natchez to Jackson MS (Rocky Springs campground) 54 miles
Tuesday 25th: Jackson to Tupelo, MS (Jeff Busby campground) 139 miles
Wednesday 26th: Tupelo to Meriwether Lewis Monument (Passing through AL into TN) 202 miles
Thursday 27th: Meriwether Lewis Mnmt to a full service site in Nashville, TN 64 miles
Friday 28th: After exploring Nashville, nice big meal and get together, maybe some live music...
Saturday 29th: Hang around or head off home...

Estimated cost start to finish, around $200-300 plus gas for 444 miles plus side trips. People would come and go as they pleased. There would be no fees or "kitty" to pay into. People could join for any part of the trip.

Open to suggestions to improve/change the itinerary.

Went down the Trace last year, took 14 days, didn't see it all, lots to do and see, took several side trips, stayed at commercial campgrounds due to traffic on Trace, willing to provide suggestions of things to see, if inter4ested let me know.

There's so much to see along that route! I did several days there last year, then headed into the Smokies for the first two months of November. I'm sure I missed a lot!

I'm thinking of building a big list of things people can see, and the only fixed points are the nightly waypoints... That way people with different age children, and retirees can all get what they want out of it.

We went on the Trace a few years ago with some other trailers. Spent 10 days--could have spent more time. Would love to go again in the fall of the year. Retirees who have more time might want to go early and visit antebellum homes, cotton plantation, battefields, etc. We will definitely be following this thread as you develop the caravan.

Sounds like a great time! I'll calendar it and see if we can work out to join in at one of the overnights...

A suggestion on the free campsites...have a backup plan...everytime I've been in them it's been bustin full or smack empty. The proposed time sometimes has a bunch of Canada folks coming south and they can pack the place!

If ya wanna go alittle past Tueplo, look at Piney Grove on Bay Springs Lake (call and make sure the camp host will still have the place open) or Tishamingo(sp) St park.

Sounds like fun. Vernon's suggestions of the Bay Springs camp site is good. Tishomingo State park as some great hiking scenery. Also Trace State Park, approx. 10 miles off the Trace just west of Tupelo would be a nice choice.

Sounds like a very cool caravan, I'll keep track of your plans to see if I might be able to join for some of it.

We have always wanted to travel the Natchez Trace. We'll have to see how things work out, but we would really like to join this caravan.

A couple of people have separately suggested that I make the caravan a day or two longer to give a bit more time to explore the Trace. I picked the start and end dates to let people have a chance to travel cross country to the start point and get home just using one week of vacation. However, if people would prefer a longer time and smaller distances each day, we could do that too.

What do you think?

I would be interested in a caravan that would be longer. If people had a shorter time frame they could still join for part of it.

Dave,
As we would be coming from south eatern PA we would probalby need two weeks of vacation anyway. Extending it one or two days would still be in our travel / vacation envelope. I think traveling conservatively, it will take us three days to get down to Natchez, MS and two days to get home from Nashville, TN.
