I'll definitely try to make one of the launch dates. I'm a federal employee too, so that makes things a lot less complicated! I know they are getting a little long in the tooth, but it's still sad to see the shuttle fleet nearing its end. I want to see one launch while I still have the chance.

Camping with Laura the host.

Laura:

As well seasoned rally attendees (we've been to one). I believe the host always supplies the free beer.

This is to confirm we will be staying with you at the KARS 1 park. We would like to stay as long as we can. We are hoping to use it as a base for a few days, as we see other parts NE Florida before we head south. We plan to be in the area on the 2nd.

Thanks Lyle and Margie

Launch

We have gone to many launches in the past, staying at Jetty Park. The whole idea of an informal rally with or without a launch sounds great! Let us know when.

Shuttle Caravan

Airdreamers,

Caravaning to Canaveral is on! Your dates are fine with me. We will probably have to wait until closer to launch time to make arrangements since launch dates and times seem to change. Hope you are having a great time at Royal Coachman. We stayed there four winters ago and had a good time.

Larry

Would love to attend this! Can't really spare the time to get there from Ohio. Can I fly in and camp in a silver tent?

We are interested in both launches, just got tickets for Feb launch. We are staying in the Tampa area and I am military. Please keep us posted. We are down at Topsail for the can opener at site 115.
Thanks.

The Poop

Seems the KARS website is sooooo out of date, the person I've been trying to contact for *reservations* doesn't even work there anymore. Funny - her voice mail does not redirect. Anyway, the Country Store personnel answered some questions:

1. How many guests and/or rigs are allowed per member? Seems that the 10 to 1 is a rule - but is not really enforced. Suposedly, I can bring in any number of guests/rigs until there is no space.
NOTICE: With annual membership, you receive a Guest Member card that allows the guest member same privileges as primary member. I'd be willing to offer up this Guest Membership to someone who would like to assist in the gathering and is interested in using the park throughout the year. I usually give this card to my dad but he didn't use it much last year - and it was always with me anyway. Now, if it is abused, I will remove the axles from your Airstream ...or worse!
2. How much space is available? Jan & Feb is their busiest season. Suggested a few folks arrive on Thursday or Friday morning to save some spots - by establishing a group setting. You know, a few of us to set up and be annoying enough to discourage anyone else from coming too near. I'm not certain I can pull off Thursday - but maybe the consummate Guest Member could?
3. What info on guests is needed in advance? None. Everyone must check in at the Country Store individually. If you arrive after hours, you'll need to call me for entry (to get the gate pass code) and then register at the Store in the morning. I'll PM you all my cell later for this issue!
4. Who can become a member? Anyone with a KSC or Military badge. Essentially, anyone who has a badge that will give them access to the Patrick Air Force Base.
5. What is the cost for RV camping (all have power/water - no sewer - but dump station)? Riverfront, Guest $25/Member $20. Other sites Guest $20/Member $15. Only 7 riverfront sites open - 13 of them are under repair.
6. Are grills available? Large cookers (grill/smokers) are $5.00/day.
7. Are fires allowed? Yes, and I will have one going. So, any who were part of the "I Hate Campfires" thread - here's your fair warning
8. Are pets allowed? Yes - leash and clean-up rules apply. Another warning - I'll have my greyhound and whippet with me.

I'm working on my attendee list!
Laura

If you have tickets - you'll be in a separate place to view the launch. So you'd just be camping with us? The visitors center is closeby...

Some Pics

I thought I had posted some pics of the park in a previous post but can't find it now. To start, some pics of the camping areas. (No real good pic of the South one, but I vote for the North anyway.)

I'll let you decide if it is "big rig friendly" as I really don't know what to make of it. I usually just pull in riverside and actually haven't even pulled the TT to the back areas - just walk my dogs there.
picture number
1: map of general park and recreation area
2: North group camping
3: South group area - looking from the pier (near where the video in post #1 was shot). Group area is across the street from riverfront and behind the restrooms and store
4: South group area - after you pass by the restrooms, the view is actually of the field & woods.
