Warning, personal rant ahead.....

Ohio got so screwed on this. New York? Really?

This is what should have happened:

Smithsonian ---> Discovery
KSC ----> Endeavor
Dayton ---> Atlantis
Seattle ---> Enterprise

Geographically disbursed, well funded, and proven ability to care for these treasures.

Ugh.

Hey now ... what about HOUSTON getting screwed!!!!!!!!!! OMG - who woulda thunk? Sorry, but IMO the communities who supported the design, fabrication, maintenance, launch and training should have an Orbiter! I am sure those folks are gravely disapointed. They have a spectacular center that could have well cared for and displayed an Orbiter.

I guess this is why the decision was so difficult! Many great facilities and reasons.

But what tie does New York have? And most people have never heard of the Cali museum?

I wouldn't have minded losing to Houston! (well, I would have.... )

I agree. The Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville should have had a shot as well as Houston. NY has no ties to the design, development or operation of the shuttles. Plus the NY area is very close to DC. The shuttle propulsion was designed and managed out of Huntsville. All we got was a orbital maneuvering engine.

Hmmmm....

Slice it down the middle, length-wise might not be such a bad idea.

I didn't have a dog in the fight but I think a case could have been made for cutting one or two of the shuttles into two pieces. Yes, it's good to see an entire shuttle but save that for KSC and the Smithsonian. The other two could have been "doubled" and more people would have access to them. Houston, Dayton, and two other locations could have been served.

I'm on the side of what's up with New York? That one certainly should have gone to another deserving location. Plus with New York in the mix that puts three on the east coast. Yeah, I know the population density is highest along the eastern seaboard, but New York?

July 2011 Shuttle Launch

Anybody planning to be at the final shuttle launch in July? I suspect it will be crowded. Any ideas on where to stay and where to watch?

Thanks, Lucius
