March 2004 - Baja Trip

Anyone interested in a Baja trip inMarch 2004?
I am planning to go to San Felipe towards the end of March for a long long weekend ( Wed/Sun)
My favorite spot is Punta Estrella, 30min south of San Felipe, right on the beach. There is water, but no other hookups. They have toilets and showers, and it's about $ 20.00 per night.
There are plenty of sites, with shade cabanas, well spaced along the shore.
The beach pics on my photopage were taken there 2 years ago.
San Felipe is about 180km ( 120mls.) from the border city of Mexicali.
Driving time in Mexico is about 2.5 hours, driving slowly.
San Felipe has tourist shopping, bars and restaurants, many Americans live there. They have plenty clean gas and Diesel, and foodstuffs. Their water is mountain spring water, not well water like on the mainland Mexico. It's safe to put into your holding tank if need be.
PMme for more information, or go to www.sanfelipe.com.mx

It sounds fun. Any kids in the age ranges 1-4 coming? I've got the two little ones that love having playmates.

Hmmm. I wasn't going to bring any of the grandkids, but I just might, if you bring your kids. I have 7 grandkids, ages 1 through 7, 4 girls and 3 boys. They might want to go. No, not all of them.......

I'm looking into Pismo Beach as an option, since it is closer to me (plus it is Monarch Butterfly season...the largest population in the country). I'll get back to you.

Also in Tucson here and interested......Would you be passing through San Diego on I-5? We would have to drive in from Tucson the day before, I think.

Kistler,
You would not have to travel to San Diego. El Centro would be the farthest point west for you, and Felipe is South from there. But to answer your question, yes, we would take I5 towards San Diego, the 805 to El Cajon, then 8 East towards El Centro, then 98 to Calexico. Calexico is only about 20 miles or so from El Centro, and is the border crossing town into Mexicali.
The travel dates are flexible, we can make plans for within a few weeks after March as well.
El Centro has some very nice RV Parks, by the way. We could all meet at one of these parks and go to San Felipe the next day.

Wink Let's see...

1174 miles just to El Centro, minimum of 17 hours 14 minutes on Mapquest ~ not to mention inclimate weather out our way that time of year. Oh well...

Thank you for the reply. El Centro sounds good for a "jumping off" place.

We hesitate to go across the border unless we were in a group and would like to go with Airstreamers.

Have you researched insurance? The last time I inquired (on-line and not sure I did it right) it seems like it was going to be $40 a day. That seems pretty costly for roughing it.

go to www.mexicaninsurance.com
I came up with $ 53.00 for 5 days, liability insurance, and $ 95.00 for full coverage, again for 5 days.
My Burb is worth $15k,and the Airstream about $ 8k.

Mexico must be DANGEROUS from what I can gather from the rates....we will have to think on this

Kistler

PS--can't you think of someplace we could all go that doesn't give us extra costs like that?

Count us in depending on timing (wife's work and getting time off). I have been toying with the idea of driving to Cabo sometime so this is a perfect 'research trip'.

The El Centro meetup sounds like a great idea, it is around 400 miles from us so that is a good first day.

How about the crew from the Joshua Tree get-together from about a year ago? You guys up for this? Gary, Jerry, Rick?

Kistler,
I am entirely open for another get together, besides the Baja one, maybe in your neck of the woods. My wife and I are going to Baja a few times a year, and my idea was to offer our company and local knowledge to possible interested parties. The cost to insure our rig seems reasonable to us, compared to the value we receive in relaxation and fun.
Driving to and from is a slight bit different than driving in US, but not necessarily more dangerous. What's dangerous is the time it takes one to adapt to it, and then the time right after you think you adapted to it. Once out of Mexicali, which I admit present a mild challenge, the road is a 4 lane, then a two lane, in decent condition. Speeds of 50mph are absolutely safe, 60mph still ok. I never go much faster than the posted speed limit, which is 80kph. i pull over and let the guys in a hurry go past me, trailering or not.
You get to use the little yellow numbers on your speedo for a change.

Have any dates been set for this yet? We will have to know by middle to end of January so my wife can get the time off.

Looking forward to it!

Kistler,
The '"w" is pronounced like a "v". Sorta like Uva.
