Hunkered Down in SoCal

Well, spoke to Jim and Cheryl yesterday once they got to their camp spot in or near Bakersfield. I believe Jim said they were camping in an Orange Grove and went out to pick oranges! Said they might stay a couple days. My guess, (Jim, correct me if I am wrong...) they might wait for better weather too!

We are still at the Salton Sea in Salton City. Scoured the weather reports from NOAA and everyone else we could find to see where the least icky weather might be. This seemed like better than most, so here we are. Tomorrow maybe lots of rain, wind, flash floods and with the delightful prospect of tornadoes somewhere.... we will keep our fingers crossed that we get by with nothing more than getting wet!

Today we decided to make the most of being sort of "stuck" here... we drove around and looked at the Salton Sea a bit, looked at housing areas and anything else we could find of interest. Right next to the RV Park where we are staying are folks with para-gliders that have engines people wear like big backpacks. Apparently next weekend is a big meet and lots of them will show up here. There are a group of guys camped out in tents (in this rain, wind, etc. no less!) and were out flying this morning and early afternoon while the winds were calm. We snapped a couple pics.

The RV Park has a nice library adjacent to the office and they have a free book exchange... and movie borrowing system. We went over and exchanged the books we had that we read on our trip so far and picked up some "new" ones. I will post a pic of the library too.

Later I will try to upload some of my pictures from the Salton Sea we took today and post them... Hope everyone is staying dry and safe!

Jim & Cheryl ~ let us all know how you are doing!

If half the people on the forums are thinking what I'm thinking, then I think the San Felipe Chamber of Commerce should reimburse you for all of your expenses while on this trip.
Thanks for keeping "us" involved.

Salton Sea

Hello everyone...

Don and I are still hunkered down at the Salton Sea... We are actually in Salton City on the west side of the "sea". Last night and this morning we had heavy continuous rain, but so far we aren't floating! Some strong gusty winds, but not too bad, been in worse out sailing. Tonight or this afternoon more of the same ~ winds could be a bit worse. Today we have been cooped up in the Bambi, but with wifi and the DVD lending library along with naps we aren't doing too bad! Looks like we will have to stay until Saturday when the sun might actually come out. We figure Friday will be less rain, but the roads are all a mess down here in SoCal... hopefully we can begin to worm our way north. Even if we were closer I don't think we could get home, the Siskiyou's have been closed as well as I-5 from Redding north along various sections.

Yesterday we were out and about and I took some pics, finally got them downloaded, so I thought I would post a few pics of the Salton Sea.

Haven't heard from Jim and Cheryl, we are assuming they are still in the Bakersfield area....

We are hanging in there! Don made 2 little "field repairs" on little tiny leak around the window in the door (repaired with duct tape ~ our only stick in the rain option...) and a leak under the front window latch that Don fixed with a slice of a pencil eraser. Permanent repairs once we get home. Otherwise Bambi is dry and warm.

Cheers!

I agree, I have never wanted to go to Mexico, but this thread has changed my mind about that!

I can't think of many other places to be "stuck" in? Those pics look beautiful! I like the "artful' repairs you've made... Don is a modern day McGuyver!

We just discovered that they have a natural hot mineral spring hot tub here. Let's see it very cool temp. wise and rainy here. Does that lead anyone to an idea? Oh we just say the Sun for a brief moment. So far this has been the place to wait out the So.Cal. storms. The way things look we will have spent as much time here as we did in Baja. There is nothing quite like going with the flow. I though I'd throw in a couple of picks form This trip. I did a water color sketch of the beach and the signature mountain that sits at the top of the bay. It's OK but nothing great. I also thought I'd include the actual drawing of Jim. A reflection of the sunset in the Bambi front window. And another paraglider shot. They, the paraglider folks, are having a meet here this coming weekend. We might see a little of it before we leave.
Claudia just closed the curtains because the Sun was in her eyes!

Don, it takes a real artist to make a beautiful watercolor like that and say it's nothing great Looks pretty good to me. The shot of the sunset reflected in the Bambi's window is classic!

Don.. those pics are beautiful! I also like the composition of the window shot... nice! Hey.. any chance you might be taking one of those ultra lights up? Bet one would fit nicely in the back of the truck... just tell Claudia its a roto-tiller for the lawn and a covering for all the woodpellets in the basement!

You'd one up Gary and Chris in the kite flying department at Area 33! I imagine one wouldn't need much runway..

There's also some hot springs around the Mammoth area that are quite nice, and the ghost town of Bodie is close by. That's one of my favorite areas in the Sierras.
Have a great trip home!
