AirSchuyler, Camping in Da Bronx!
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
I've learned my lesson -- all of the rally details will be on the listing in the calendar where I can keep them up to date and correct them if necessary.
Before I send you to the calendar page you need to know that this is a CLUB-FREE rally. You pre-register, pre-pay and show up in an Airstream and you can camp with us for the weekend. It doesn't get any easier than that...
You'll find a link to a printable registration form on the calendar page here:
Airstream Forums - NAO: AirSchuyler, Camping in Da Bronx!
Any questions or comments just reply to this post here. Looking forward to seeing many of you in Da Bronx. Thanks!

Thanks for the invitation. Hopefully, we will be well on our way to Alaska by the time of the rally.

It will be good to get under the awning and around the campfire again!
I just added a 3rd Fort Schuyler slide show to the Calendar Event page. This one is from 2007:

Thanks to Bill a big reminder (in case you can't figure it out) this is a DRY CAMPING Rally. However 24 hour restrooms are a couple of hundred feet from our location and showers about 1000 feet from our location. There is also a dump station for us to use on departure day.

Leo - we've never been to NYC. A good thing or a bad thing - I don't know.
But - is there an opportunity to ride in on public transportation for sightseeing? I don't think I want to drive the Silverado into the city. Pretty sure I don't, actually.

YES there is a bus, but...
Pat,
I'll get the actual details for you. YES there's a public bus that will take you to Times Square. We looked over the details of this years ago but to date no one has actually done it because we've carpooled instead. The MTA bus either picks up at the front gate, or it was two (short) blocks North of the campus.
Locals tend to want to hang out for the weekend, but out-of-towners are often drawn to AirSchuyler because it is so close to the city. In 2009 we had organized tours, but all were car-pooled. We had 12 go to Times Square for the John's Pizzeria and the Duck Boat Tours. Another two car loads went and did Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and another 2-3 car loads went and did the Bronx Zoo. A little birdy told me we have 2-3 couples coming down from Canada - my guess is that these folks are definitely NYC bound at a minimum...
I drove 5 Saturday morning and it was a very quick 30 minute ride devoid of traffic -- a straight shot in. We even found FREE parking on 8th Ave, right on the street. I'm pretty sure those are all metered parking now but Saturday lot parking isn't all that expensive (compared to weekdays).
Even if we set you up with public transportation (and yes there are MANY bus tours in the city itself) I think you'll find a carpool forming Times Square at a minimum. If you're signing up I'll coordinate what is going on here with what is happening within the NortheastAO email distribution list (which you're welcome to join if you like).
If you were really interested in the Bronx Zoo, Hunt might have plans to go back. I don't think he got his fill last time...

Ah, yes, the Zoo on Public School Outing Day, acres of screaming students, exasperated teachers and chaperones, zoo officials constantly yelling at kids not to tease the animals, escaped snakes, ice cream fights, fistfights, lost kids, runaways. Simply charming. I had forgotten what a treat this was for a 60+ year old. I'd prefer to be infested with maggots than repeating that fine day.

That was on a weekday wasn't it? If I remember correctly we thought the Zoo would be a better weekday trip over having to deal with the weekend crowds.
Was this actually some special day for school field trips in NYC or one of the Burroughs? Maybe come June many schools are furloughing their kids for one last outing before the year is out. Maybe it's like that weekdays in June regardless?
Quite the opposite, a trip to Manhattan is definitely better on a weekend day when all the commuters and most of the resulting traffic subsides.

It was a Friday and at the least appeared to be a county P.S. sanctioned event replete with specially colored t-shirts (a "uniform" if you will) with P.S. XXX and the school name printed below. The shirts looked new. To the schools' credit though, the kids were not festooned with berets.

Pat,
I knew Google had a public transit option under maps (Google Transit). I just entered the route for a 9am Saturday morning departure and this is what I got back:
SUNY Maritime College to Times Square
The BX40 bus indeed leaves from the front gate of SUNY Maritime and there is a SUNY parking lot right there where you can leave your pick-up. You transfer from the bus to a subway in the Bronx and then again in Manhattan at Grand Central Station (a place I've driven by dozens of times but have never been in).
It's nice to have the specifics for public transit and once you're in Times Square the Tour buses routes and options are many: Gray Line New York Sightseeing Tours & Cruises

Adult stores, the Peeps, the second floor "hotel" rooms, the odors, the muggings, syringes, night life, sirens. sex menus now all gone...people's lives uprooted and destroyed...Disneyfied by Mayors Koch and Giuliani. So long Americana, so long Slice of Life. I guess, Don, you may have to go abroad to reward yourself since Boston and Baltimore have been purified. BTW, are you joinng us?
