50th Anniversary Cape (Town)To Cairo Caravan and Rally
I should be arriving about 5:00 p.m. -- running late as usual -- just leaving for the laundramat -- then final packing of Overlander and hitching to Cadillac (I am hoping that the Overlander's umbilical cable mates up with the Cadillac's wiring following the installation of new cable on Overlander). If I find that I am running too late, I will hop over to Cape in my Bug and return with the Overlander early tomorrow morning. One small advantage to living so close to the rally site . . . .

We hope to join you.
Hi Mike Johns,
Scott Capland and I will be on the road from Kansas city at 5:00 am to get to the cape in time to video this Cape to Cairo: Caravan. WE HOPE!
I am the third owner of my Grandfathers 1948 Airstream. This beautiful Airstream is now owned by Corry Nolen.
Corry and family will sure to be on time for the start of the caravan.
Thanks,
Mike

Join WBCCI
Maybe after this successful Caravan, Steve will finally join the WBCCI! Pee Wee, as the Ambassador of the WBCCI, you have to bend his ear and get him signed on!

Rob, you are joking right? Surely Steve is a member of the WBCCI with organizing an event of this nature. Just the liability insurance is worth the cost of membership.

Successful Caravan
Here's a pic from Terri's cell phone as we cross the bridge from Cape heading to Cairo. It was a pretty spectacular site to see, police escort and all .... Thanks, Steve!

A Swim in the muddy Mississippi or was it the Ohio?
You guys are all a HOOT! Little Pee Wee
This was my first experience with an event like this with a club of this nature.
The history of Airstream lends itself to a pride without any kind of exclusivity. I want to thank all of you for having such great spirits and loving hearts. Scott and I felt truly welcome even without having a trailer.
Hope this link work. OH YEA Sorry about all the other Family albums.

Apple Crisp
Several folks have asked for my Apple Crisp recipe, so here it is:
Apple (or Rhubarb) Crisp
Crust
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup oatmeal
Mix together. Save about a quarter of the mixture to crumble on top. Press 3/4 of the mixture into a greased 9x13 pan. Add 6 cups of sliced apples on the crust. I used Granny Smith but Wealthy or McIntosh are better.
Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons corn starch
1 Tablespoon cinnemon
Combine and boil until syrupy. Pour hot syrup over apples and crumble remaining crust mixture on top. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.
Enjoy.

WOW! Such an event! I love reading this thread and it appears everyone had a fabulous time. Love the bridge crossing photo! We, unfortunately, were not in our Airstream as we crossed the States, but had the incredible honor to meet both SoldierMedic and "Mr. Wee", by happenstance, at the top of the Arch...imagine that! Must be magnetic aluminum fate, or the AS t-shirt Steve was wearing that I called him on! Great idea to wear your t-shirt or our paths may have never crossed except here on AirForums! PeeWee, it was wonderful to chat with you! Best of luck on all your future ventures!

Mike,
Our thanks to you and Scott for making such a long drive to document by photo and video our rally. You guys are definitely a part of this rally's success. So glad you could make it. Just let us know what kind of trailer you want and we'll start looking.

We had the BEST time.
THANKS to all who made our first rally (without a trailer) such a wonderful event. We loved every minute of it and have determined 2 hours for an open house is not nearly long enough.
We learned so much and regret that we didn't get to talk to everyone, there just wasn't enough time... We've got GREAT ideas for finishing our trailer and I am ready to jump back in (come on Mike!)
Steve & Amy - you guys are superstars and we look forward to attending another one of your rallies! Your attention to detail is amazing. And thanks for getting Pee Wee to come, his stories were really fun. We really enjoyed his scrapbook.
We love our mini toaster oven (that is big enough for a cracker) and have put it next to the collection of items to go in the trailer when it's finished. You wont be seeing it again unless you tour our trailer!
I hope we all cross paths again really soon!

A big THANK YOU to Steve & Amy for a fantastic rally. This was one of the best I've ever attended - particularly the caravan to Cairo, IL and back on Fri. Enjoyed it very much even though I didn't manage to get one of the coveted chairs in the prize drawings. Hope Dacia gets over her illness quickly. I left this morning and am in Red Hills State Park, IL where I'll rest up for a day or so before heading for Jackson Center and will then be heading for the Turkey Run rally in two weeks. Hope everyone had a safe trip home.

A small update
We arrived home today around 1 PM and finished unpacking around 2 PM. Amy and Pee Wee are both asleep, and I am trying to stay awake as I have to go on call fro 6 PM to 6 AM.
I just spoke with Sugarfoot, and she says she is feeling MUCH better than since she spoke with Mr. Hobo.
I want to thank everyone who attended the rally, or helped out in some way. Those who donated prizes especially have my gratitude, as you made drawings last night a very fun time. To Mike Johns and your video partner in crime, thanks for making the trip out, and covering a great event. Thanks to the local media folks for covering us as well. A huge thanks to Mollie's cafe who's catered meal recreating the last meal in Africa was absolutely phenomenal.
There was another article published this morning in the Southeast Missourian, so please feel free to check it out. There were two typos, but still good.
Airstream caravan 're-creates' 1959 trip from Cape Town to Cairo
Here is the caravan video.
