After seeing that Kevin posted that there was camping at Fort Defiance, I made a call to Cairo's City Hall. I didn't want any issues with trying to pull close to 20 trailers in, and have them think I was having the rally there. The gentleman I spoke to told me they have not used it for camping for years due to costs associated with flooding to keep it clean.

He told me how the flooding was due to increased river traffic when Cairo was booming. This happened to be a partial downfall since the flooding was brought on by increased river shipping and traffic to Cairo.

I asked if possibly the local police might stop traffic northbound from Missouri while we all enter into Fort Defiance. He said he would call the boys in blue and ask them. I am awaiting a call back.

Anyone have a nice tripod for a group shot while there?

Steve

I have a Canon Digital Rebel SLR, new wide-angle lense, and a sturdy tripod that I carry when caravanning/rallying.

It may be a little difficult to find a place for us all to park while you run in for carryout .

The traffic isn't terribly heavy along the main highway where Shemwell's is located. At that point, the highway is four-lane with parallel parking on both sides of the highway. In addition, there is a rather large parking lot across the side street from Shemwell's. Shemwell's have their own parking lot so there aren't normally very many (if any) vehicles parked along the street.

I would say that if people want Shemwell's then they could stop. They may even see if Shemwell's could deliver to the park for them. I don't however have plans to stop the entire caravan on the main road because I am sure many people will have eaten before the caravan to Cairo. While there may be abundant parking, we will not know for sure on that day until we arrive. Maybe we should have Pee Wee drive far ahead to work it out with the folks in Cairo before we arrive like in 1959 .

There were two scouts, Nick and Dale. It's my turn for R&R while Nick drives.

I was going to call Shemwell's today, but got side tracked working on my huge last minute project.
A very good friend of mine called in a panic last friday.
She had a lady making 4 bridesmaid dresses for her daughters and niece. The wedding is this Saturday and this lady left town for 2 months with only 2 (badly)completed dresses, 1 more 3/4 done and the 4th wasn't even started! The good news is we will get this done without my poor friend having a heart attack. My friend is originally from Nigeria and is very interested in hearing the caravan stories. She was only 3 years old when it happened and does not remember anyone talking about it. These dresses are made out of the coolest fabric ever! It is from Nigeria and is very fancy with beads and embroidery. Grace has promised to bring back some for me the next time she visits.
Once I get rid of all of this on friday I WILL start on airstream stuff.

If there is enough interest in Shemwell's, I could easily drive down to Cairo and check with the manager to see if they might deliver to Fort Defiance for a group order. I could also get a take-out menu and scan it in for everyone to see. Even if they can't/won't deliver, as Caboose, I could make what should be a relatively short stop to get the orders. Once we get to Shemwell's, the route is very direct to the park no turns until the park.

Kevin

P.S.: I don't mind making the trip -- we are having great convertible weather and it is expected to continue -- I am also craving a Shemwell's Barbecue (my father was with me on Sunday and isn't supposed to have Barbecue so we had to drive on by).

The last time that I ate at Shemwell's the closest thing they had to vegetarian was Pig Salad -- standard garden salad with a pile of their pork barbecue in the center. I knew that I should have stopped and picked up a take-out menu -- I would have never escaped without a barbecue -- the hickory smoking pit aroma was enough of an enticement all by itself.

I knew the veggie comments were coming before I even read the two offended paries responses. . Lunch is on your own for Friday, and I expected most people to eat before leaving on the caravan at noon. I am completely fine with folks grabbing Shemwell's on the trip if they want. We can take an hour stop for pictures, food, etc. I bet they would deliver the food to the location if cash was in hand.

Did anyone notice a group of 4 that signed up yesterday from Marion, IL? Their name is 64Cardsfan. I have been unable to reach them as I need to talk to them as soon as possible.

Will not be able to attend due to a board meeting in Jeff City...was thinking how fun it might be if someone (one of the many creative and talented) came up w/ some Burma-shave type signs along the route. JAT

Carbondale, IL (a little over an hour's drive from Cape on scenic roads) has a small restaurant called Melange. We haven't been there so we don't have first hand experience. A friend who knows that Laird is a BBQ judge mentioned that Melange has a BBQ Tofu under their "Olde Southern BBQ" menu selections. Laird hasn't come across any Tofu entries in competitions yet -- that he knows of.

Right under the BBQ tofu is "Old Fashioned Fried Bologna." Link to Malange: Grill Menu

The exact sauce that Shemwell's makes isn't bottled, but there is a very similar sauce sold in stores in our area. The Sauce is marketed under the name: Cairo Bar-B-Que Sauce. Shemwell's does, however, sell their barbecue by the pound with sauce in quantity.

The sauce is made with tomato juice, vinegar, and horse radish among other ingredients -- it is very spicy -- and quite delicious (IMHO).
