2016 KY Derby Rally in GA

If you can't make it to KY for the Derby how about the Stone Mountain Campground in Decatur, GA?

25 sites have been set aside for us in the Purple Loop/F Trail. We've lined up use of the Pavilion to watch the KY Derby and hope to be able to have some of our own KY Derby fun. If we can get enough people into the swing of things we can have a Mint Julep, horseshoes and/or KY Derby Hat contest.

It's only 8 weeks away now and here are the plans...

The Official KY Derby rally starts on Friday but for those who arrive early, on Thursday May 5th we’ll have a grill going so bring your grilling food for dinner and then we can have a little Cinco De Mayo evening with Margaritas by the fire.

What I have in mind is for this rally to capture the fun of a race day. Days and times are yet to be determined for each game but here is what is planned...

Get your creative juices flowing because just like the KY Derby we want to see some crazy hats so we’ll be having a Tacky Trailer Hat Contest. We’ll vote for the best, tackiest Trailer Hat that you come up with; that’s right, an RV/trailer needs to be a part of your hat somewhere. Winner gets a prize.

We’ll have a Horseshoes tournament (made of plastic, easy, lightweight and not dangerous to throw). Winner gets a prize.

On Saturday we'll do our own version of horse racing with Flamingos. Depending on time & number of participants we'll shoot for Triple Crown Racing: The KY Derby, The Preakness Stakes and The Belmont Stakes. Flamingo's advance on the track by the roll of the dice. Prizes given to winners of each race.

We’ll have some funny money race betting for our Flamingo races and on the horse racing of the Ky Derby that we’ll be watching on the large screen TV at the campgrounds pavilion.

Prizes will be donated by you...one per trailer/site. Please wrap the prize and limit the cost to $15. It can be useful or a gag, it’s up to you to surprise us all.

We’ll also share some pot luck meals, a fire or two with a Swedish torch and surely Mint Juleps will be in there somewhere.

Here is the start of my hat...all from the dollar store. Wasn't it clever of me to turn an Easter Basket upside down?! haha Bill is supposed to supply me with a trailer to put under my palm tree. Easy peasy.

(Hmm, hat is sideways, hopefully you get the tree is on top of the hat. :P)

Although there hasn't been any activity on the forum for this rally there has been activity on our FB page. Here's the schedule and details...

Thursday 6 pm Happy Hour/campfire
Friday 6 pm Happy Hour/campfire
Saturday 9 am Breakfast Potluck at the Pavilion
1pm Mint Julep time (if you haven't started already)
1:30 pm Flamingo Racing; betting and racing begins!
5 pm Dinner at the Pavilion
Bill and I will be grilling chicken for everyone;
please bring sides
Wear your hats to the dinner Saturday evening. A voting box will be on a table to place your vote for the “Tackiest Trailer Hat’. Winners announced before final betting takes place.

After the Derby has run and winnings dispersed each trailer will count their money and prizes will be picked so don’t forget to bring your (unwrapped) prize contribution.

Here's how the betting and prizes will work for the rally:
Each trailer will get $200 betting money, the ‘trailer’ with the most money at the end of the betting ‘season’ gets first choice of prizes, ‘trailer’ with 2nd highest amount of money gets 2nd choice of prizes and so on.
Side betting throughout the betting season is highly encouraged.
Official betting will take place on 3 Flamingo races and the last betting is on the actual KY Derby Horse race. You can bet as often, on as many, and as much as you want per Flamingo race at the betting window (Bill) but you’re limited to 3 bets on the KY Derby race. Actual betting odds for the official KY Derby Horse Race will be posted and used to pay out those winnings. Betting window opens upon arrival but cut off for placing bets for the KY Derby Horse race is 6 pm Saturday evening.
The Flamingo Races will be as follows…
There will be 6 Racing Flamingoes and Jockeys (you) for each of the 3 races. The race course is undetermined at this time but each Jockey will hold a Racing Flamingo between their knees and race around the course. Bets are straightforward but each race will have a Win, Place and Show payout. Win = 100%, Place = 50% and Show = 25% of winnings.
For betting on the Flamingo Racing, the odds will be undisclosed until after the race at which time, the odds, which will be in a sealed envelope around the necks of each Flamingo, will be revealed and winnings dispersed accordingly.
The “Tacky Trailer Hat” Contest winners will receive additional betting money:
Win/1st place $100
Place/2nd place $50
Show/3rd place $25


Stone Mountain may still have sites left if you decide you want to participate after all. Just be sure to tell them you are with the SE Camping Unit/Airstream group in order to get close by and the camping discount.

Derby clothes?! I don't have any derby clothes!! I wonder if there's time to find some harlequin pants...haha

Well we do have our hats and I have all the racing flamingo's in their trailer stalls since we're just about ready to hit the road.

We'll be there for Cinqo De Mayo to get a head start on the fun and festivities.
